Children International focused on eradicating poverty

By Melissa Arroyo
Eradicating poverty worldwide might seem ambitious; but for Susana Eshleman, president and CEO at Children International and a native of Argentina, eliminating it starts with “the power of one.”
“Being a Latina and having grown (up) very close to real poverty made me feel like I had a personal mission to help,” Eshleman said. “The most rewarding part of my job is seeing lives being fundamentally transformed and to see our youth becoming multipliers of change.”
According to Eshleman, Children International uses a holistic approach that’s focused on breaking the cycle of poverty by providing children in developing countries with health, education and empowerment to prepare them for the future and helping them find jobs. Different from the approach of other organizations, Eshleman said that Children International’s success is attributed to this holistic approach that ensures kids are healthy, educated and inspired.
Children International – which is helping 300,000 children worldwide, including in six Latin American countries – invests in each child’s first 20 years of life. Another key component of the organization’s investment helps the children succeed after receiving assistance. During the second decade of the children’s lives, the organization invests in helping them attain technical and soft skills through training programs to help them find jobs that are usually high in demand where they live.
According to Eshleman, the empowerment program has impacted the lives of many over the past five years. Of the 5,000-plus kids who’ve completed it, 79 percent of them have found a job within 12 months of completion.
“What we hear from kids over and over again is that they discovered their worth, their talent and their significance,” Eshleman said. “They begin to act differently; they become leaders, so they don’t become victims of their circumstances. They become agents of positive change.”
