Empleado de Reyes Media Group y artista Luis Merlo tiene un amor por el arte – un amor que se puede atribuir a un individuo significativo en la vida de Merlo: su madre.
“Desde que era un niño, yo amaba el arte y le agradezco a mi mamá por eso,” declaró Merlo. “Ella disfrutaba del arte – e inculcó el amor por las artes y todo lo bello de la vida (en mí)”.
Merlo y su compañero de trabajo Héctor Pérez Sevilla están mostrando sus obras de arte para El Día de los Muertos en la galería de arte en el Mattie Rhodes Center. Sus trabajos estarán en exhibición hasta el 12 de noviembre en la dirección 915 & 919 W. 17th Street

Nacido en Chicago, pero criado en Guadalajara, Jalisco, México, Merlo ha desarrollado una habilidad diversa establecida en las artes. Una de las categorías que la que se especializa es “el arte vectorial,” una forma de dibujo free-lance digital creado en Adobe Illustrator.
“Algunas personas no entienden el concepto de arte vectorial,” dijo Merlo. “Creen que sacó la imagen del internet y la manipuló en Photoshop, pero ese no es el caso.”
Merlo inicia con un documento en blanco y usa su ratón para seleccionar los instrumentos que va a utilizar para empezar a crear sus obras de arte. También pinta y dibuja en el metodo tradicional, y disfruta de la fotografía tambien.
“Creo que, después de tantos años de hacer arte vectorial, he mejorado – y yo creo que es algo muy único y diferente a lo que la mayoría de las personas están acostumbrados a ver (en el arte),” dijo Merlo.
Luis ha usado sus habilidades como artista del vector, ilustrador y diseñador gráfico durante los últimos 14 años con Reyes Media Group, específicamente trabajando con Dos Mundos como el diseñador gráfico. Antes de comenzar su carrera en Kansas City, Mo., estudió comunicaciones en Guadalajara.
Actualmente Merlo y Pérez tienen su propia marca llamada Lola’s. Lola es una hermosa calaverita y es el personaje principal de esta marca que está basada o inspirada en el Día de los Muertos.
Luis espera que su arte anime a las personas a que se comprometan con el mundo. Cree que las personas se han vuelto más indiferentes acerca de la vida y han perdido la sensibilidad a los sentimientos de otras personas.
“Yo sé que el mundo está cambiando día a día con la indiferencia de la humanidad,” dijo Merlo. “Como un pequeño grano de arena, sólo quiero mostrar a otros la belleza, el amor, la esperanza y las cosas buenas de la vida. Y si a través de mi arte, puedo sembrar esto, la belleza y el amor, en el corazón de una persona, pues siento que ya estoy contribuyendo en algo para hacer un mundo mejor.”

Artist Luis Merlo demonstrates his love through the art

Reyes Media Group employee and artist Luis Merlo has a love for art – a love that can be attributed to one significant individual in Merlo’s life: his mother.
“Since I was a boy, I (have) loved art and I thank my mom for that,” Merlo stated. “She enjoyed art – and she instilled that love for the arts and everything beautiful in life (in me).”
Merlo and co-worker Hector Perez Sevilla are showcasing their artwork in the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibit at the Mattie Rhodes Art Center & Gallery. Their work will be on display through Nov. 12 at 915 & 919 W. 17th Street

Born in Chicago, but raised in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Merlo has developed a diverse skill set in the arts. One category he specializes in is “vector art,” a form of digital free-lance drawing created in Adobe Illustrator.
“Some people don’t understand the concept of vector art,” Merlo said. “They think I pulled the image from the web and manipulated it in Photoshop, but that’s not the case.”
Merlo starts with a blank document and uses his mouse to select the tool he’ll use to begin creating his works of art. He also paints and draws in the traditional sense, and enjoys photography.
“I think that, after so many years of doing vector art, I’ve improved – and I think that it’s something very unique to what most people are used to seeing (in art),” Merlo said.
Luis has used his skills as a vector artist, illustrator and graphic designer for the past 14 years with Reyes Media Group, specifically by working with Dos Mundos as the graphic designer. Before starting his career in Kansas City, Mo., he studied communications in Guadalajara.
Currently, Merlo and Perez have their own brand called Lola’s. Lola is a beautiful little skull and main character of the brand which drew its inspiration from the Day of the Dead.
Luis hopes that his art encourages those who view it to engage with the world. He believes that people have become more indifferent about life and lost the sensitivity to other people’s feelings.
“I know that the world is changing day by day with humanity’s indifference,” Merlo said. “As a small grain of sand, I only want to show others beauty, love, hope and the good things in life. If my artwork would, by chance, stem this beauty and love in the heart of one person, then I feel as though I’m contributing something to making this world a better place.”
