“Estoy esperando a ver qué sucede.

Distance runner meets unfamiliar challenge, raises money for charity

By Shawn Roney
When John Kohler pursued his most recent athletic endeavor, he found himself in unfamiliar territory.
To help raise money for the Kansas City area-based charity organization Social Heart, the Colombian-born, Olathe, Kan., resident opted to run in early October across Kansas. Although Kohler had been a distance runner for several years and had run some ultra-marathon races, he hadn’t run across the Sunflower State before. In fact, no one had “ever done it before or had attempted it,” he said during a Nov. 18 phone interview.
“It’s a tough deal because … I guess there’s no handbook (for it)…. If you … (are) running a marathon, … (there are) tons of training plans out there – (and for a) half-marathon,” said Kohler, who took a few years to plan his run. “This was just kind of, basically, a big experiment.”
Kohler’s “big experiment” involved running what amounted to a series of ultra-marathons spanning Oct. 1-11. Starting in Colorado, he averaged 40 miles per day and headed east, raising money as he ran. Eventually, he finished his 435-mile trek in Kansas City, Mo. His charitable run raised about $1,200, he estimated.
Kohler attributed his ability to finish his series of ultra-marathons partly to his mindset.
“Honestly, after about 30 miles, … it’s mental at that point – just battling through the pain and getting used to it,” he said.
In addition, Kohler’s race crew – which included his father Gary and his father-in-law, Tom Kearney – helped him to get through it, he said.
“(I) definitely couldn’t have done it without them,” Kohler stated.
Having gone through it, Kohler isn’t sure if he’ll go through it again.
“I’m just kind of waiting to see what happens,” he said. “(I’ve) been recovering for the last month-and-a-half…. We’ll see.”
