De las muchas fiestas celebradas durante diciembre, una de las más importantes para los latinos es el Día de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.
Celebrada el 12 de diciembre, la fiesta tiene un significado especial para los mexicanos – y con buenos motivos. La Virgen de Guadalupe hizo su primera aparición en México (a Juan Diego). Su iglesia fue construida en el Cerro del Tepeyac, en la Ciudad de México. Pero la importancia de la Virgen de Guadalupe va más allá de México.
La Virgen de Guadalupe es una de las figuras más veneradas de la Iglesia Católica. Una razón es que trae esperanza, felicidad, fe, unión y compromiso para los hispanos, especialmente para los mexicanos. Otra es porque es un icono que ha sobrevivido durante siglos y es admirada por todos los que tienen fe, independientemente de su posición social.
De hecho, es tan admirada, que no sólo el 12 de diciembre, sino todos los días miles de personas visitan su iglesia, la Basílica de Guadalupe en la Ciudad de México. Muchos mexicanos y sudamericanos caminan largas distancias para visitarla y algunos otros caminan de rodillas como forma de respeto.
Además, “La Morenita” también es celebrada por sus milagros (ver el artículo “Conversaciones callejeras”). Es muy conocida por ayudar a curar a los enfermos, ayudar en embarazos difíciles o cualquier otra persona que está sufriendo y pide su bendición.
Por otra parte, la Virgen de Guadalupe se ha convertido en un símbolo importante del mantenimiento de las tradiciones. Las generaciones mayores, por ejemplo, han transmitido sus creencias a las generaciones más jóvenes. Existen muchas tradiciones mexicanas celebradas en su fecha. La gente asiste a misa o enciende velas en casa para rendirle homenaje. En muchas casas mexicanas, la gente reza el rosario y termina la noche con una cena familiar y a medianoche, celebridades mexicanas se reúnen en su iglesia para cantarle las tradicionales “Mañanitas” para honrar su cumpleaños.
En los Estados Unidos, personas de ascendencia sudamericana y mexicana han adoptado muchas de estas tradiciones mexicanas, incluso en el área de Kansas City. En las ciudades de Kansas, muchas iglesias organizan festividades para celebrar a “La Morenita del Tepeyac”. Observenlas el 12 de diciembre, mientras miles de latinos celebran a una dama de importancia internacional.

The importance of the Virgin of Guadalupe

Of the many holidays observed during December, one of the most important to Latinos is the Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Observed on Dec. 12, the holiday has special meaning for Mexicans – and for good reason. The Virgin of Guadalupe reportedly made her first appearance in Mexico (to Juan Diego). She also had her church built in the Cerro of Tepeyac in Mexico City. But the Virgin of Guadalupe’s importance extends beyond Mexico.
The Virgin of Guadalupe is among the most venerated figures in the Catholic Church. One reason is that she brings hope, happiness, faith, union and commitment to Hispanics, especially Mexicans. Another is because she’s an icon who has survived for centuries and is honored by everyone who has faith, regardless of social standing.
She’s honored so much, in fact, that thousands of people visit her church, the Basilica de Guadalupe in Mexico City, to honor her – and not just on Dec. 12. Many Mexicans and South Americans walk long distances to visit her. Many others walk on their knees out of respect.
In addition, “La Morenita” (“Little Brunette” in English) is celebrated for her miracles (see “Street Talk” article). She’s well-known for helping to heal the sick, helping with difficult pregnancies or anyone else who’s struggling and requests her blessing.
Moreover, the Virgin of Guadalupe has become an important symbol of maintaining traditions. Older generations, for example, have passed on their beliefs in her to younger generations. And there are many Mexican traditions observed during her holiday. People attend Mass or light candles at home to pay tribute to her. In many Mexican houses, people pray the rosary and conclude the night with a family dinner. And at midnight, Mexican celebrities get together at her church to sing her the traditional “Mananitas” (Mañanitas in Spanish) to honor her birthday.
In the United States, people of South American and Mexican descent have adopted many of those Mexican traditions, including in the Kansas City area. In the two Kansas Cities, many churches organize festivities to celebrate “La Morenita del Tepeyac.” Look for them this Dec. 12, as thousands of Latinos celebrate a lady of international importance.
