Many toys limit learning
Consult an alternative list of toys for Christmas presents
Commentary by Carey Juez-Perez, Licensed Clinical Social Worker
With Christmas approaching, many children are asking Santa Claus for the newest toys. And typically, Santa is agreeing to give them those toys, without realizing that they’re often inappropriate for young children.
Manufactures claim their latest toys are educational because they’re plastered with letters, the alphabet and colors. But the toys exist solely to teach children to memorize the skills needed to play with them, rather than naturally learning colors, numbers and letters.
If you’re a parent, encourage “Santa” to bring your children the following types of toys this Christmas:
*Toys without batteries: Toys with batteries often incorporate overstimulating elements, such as sounds and lights. Often, such toys have one function – to respond when the child pushes a button or buttons. Naturally, the child will push the button or buttons multiple times. This only teaches rote memorization. Instead, look for toys where the child must create the solution. Such toys include matching-oriented games, wooden blocks and puzzles.
*Toys that encourage the use of imagination: Look for toys that can be used in several ways. For instance, children can play with blocks to build a tower or to learn sorting and counting. And skip the Disney-themed dollhouses and pick a generic dollhouse to allow your child to create a unique story, rather than simply recreating scenes from a popular movie.
*Homemade toys: Toys can be simply a toilet paper roll with marbles rolling through it or a stack of paper cups. Homemade toys encourage children to learn, explore and create. Remember, many parents comment that their children are more interested in the cardboard boxes and tissue paper that are used to package a popular toy, rather than the toy itself.
Merry Christmas. Hopefully, Santa will bring your children toys that encourage learning, rather than overstimulation and rote memorization.
