Siete leones del zoológico de Kansas City recibieron apetecibles regalos este año. El 10 y 11 de diciembre, del zoológico tuvo dos días de “enriquecimiento navideño” para su manada de leones y tuvieron bolas de carne como decoraciones y carne envuelta para regalo.
«Nos gusta tener el enriquecimiento regularmente, pero obviamente hoy estamos decorando para Navidad», dijo el guardián de animales para el zoológico, Joni Hartman, durante una preliminar a los medios de comunicación el 8 de diciembre. «Pero nos gusta agregarle chispa para ellos, para que no sea como venir a la exposición todos los días y ver siempre lo mismo».
Durante la preliminar a los medios de comunicación, «Gene» la madre leona de 20 años de edad, y algunos de sus cachorros salieron a investigar y arrancaron la carne que estaba envuelta para regalo. Las frías temperaturas de Kansas City tampoco detuvieron a los leones africanos.
«Realmente toleran el frío bastante bien», dijo Hartman.
Hartman calcula que tuvieron unos 30 visitantes para ver a los leones el 10 de diciembre y dijo que el fin de semana «fue muy bueno». Esta es la segunda vez que el zoológico ha celebrado Navidad con los leones, dijo ella.
«Probablemente lo haremos todas las Navidades».

A carnivorous Christmas for zoo’s lions

Kansas City Zoo’s seven lions received enticing holiday presents this year.
Meatball ornaments and gift-wrapped meat were on hand as the zoo held two days of “holiday enrichment” for its lion pride on Dec. 10 and 11.
“We like to put enrichment out on a normal basis, but obviously today we’re decorating for Christmas,” Animal Curator for the Zoo, Joni Hartman, said during a media preview on Dec. 8. “But we like to spice it up a little bit for them so it’s not just coming out on exhibit everyday and seeing the same ol’ thing.”
During the media preview, “Gene,” the twenty year-old mother lion, and some of her cubs emerged to investigate and rip into the gift-wrapped meat. Kansas City’s cold temperatures did not stop the African lions either.
“They’re actually fairly cold tolerant,” Hartman said.
Hartman estimates that 30 visitors showed up to see the lions on Dec. 10 and said the weekend “went really well.” It’s the second time the Zoo has celebrated Christmas with the lions, she said.
“We’ll probably do it every Christmas.”
The Kansas City Zoo is currently open from 9:30a.m. to 4p.m. daily and will be closed on Christmas and New Years Day. It is located at 6800 Zoo Drive in Kansas City, Missouri and online at kanascityzoo.org
