New robot technology to help the heart’
An innovation in medical technology is expected to help provide ways to treat heart conditions.
Developed by researchers at Harvard University and the Boston Children’s Hospital, the innovation is a soft heart robot that’s designed to fit around any sized heart. According to the Harvard Gazette, “the sleeve twists and compresses in synch with a beating heart, augmenting cardiovascular functions weakened by heart failure.”
Unlike other medical equipment used in relation to heart conditions, the soft heart robot never comes in contact with blood, thus avoiding possible blood clots and the risk of a stroke.
While the soft robot sleeve wraps around the heart, an external pump is used to “power the soft actuators,” according to the Gazette. The actuators “mimic the outer muscle layers” of the heart, providing an in-synch rhythm of the beating heart.
It’s also customizable for each patient. Depending on where the heart needs more assistance, the robot can be modified to target the weak area. The example given by the Gazette is “if a patient has more weakness on the left side of the heart, the actuators can be tuned to give more assistance there.”
Extensive research is underway to help address questions and concerns regarding the soft robot. However, researchers working on the project are optimistic about introducing the technological advancement in the near future to the masses.
The soft robot is being developed during a critical time for addressing heart failure, which affects 41 million people worldwide, according to the Gazette.
