“Elian” fue transmitida en abril durante el Festival de Cine de Tribeca en la ciudad de Nueva York. El documental narra el viaje de González, incluyendo su rescate en la costa de Florida por dos pescadores.
La película también cubre la lucha legal por González entre sus familiares en Miami y su padre cubano, quien perdió a su madre y otras 10 personas huyendo de Cuba y fue conocido como el “Milagro de Acción de Gracias” después de su rescate. Durante la pelea de custodia, el padre afirmó que su hijo fue tomado de él sin su permiso. Los miembros de la familia del muchacho en Miami querían mantenerlo en Estados Unidos. Además, la película cubre la incursión en Florida por agentes federales de Estados Unidos que resultó en que González volviera a Cuba.
Gonzalez, que ha completado una licenciatura en ingeniería industrial, es al parecer un miembro de la Unión de Jóvenes Comunistas y feliz con su familia en Cuba. Regularmente, se toma tiempo dar las gracias a los que lucharon por su regreso a Cuba. En varias entrevistas, González ha dicho que Fidel Castro es su héroe. En el documental, ha hablado de su admiración y respeto por el fallecido líder cubano.

“Thanksgiving Miracle” rescue victim the subject of a new documentary
On Thanksgiving Day in 1999, Elian Gonzalez was rescued when he was 5 years old.
In 2017, the 23-year-old Cuban who drew international media attention as a 5-year-old is the subject of a new film.
“Elian” was shown in April during the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. The documentary chronicles Gonzalez’s journey, including his rescue off the coast of Florida by two fishermen.
The film also covers the legal fight between Gonzalez’s Miami relatives and his Cuban father over Gonzalez, who lost his mother and 10 other people fleeing from Cuba and became known as the “Thanksgiving Miracle” following his rescue. During the custody fight, the father claimed his son was taken from him without his permission. The boy’s family members in Miami wanted to keep him in the United States.
In addition, the film covers the raid in Florida by U.S. federal agents that resulted in Gonzalez returning to Cuba.
Gonzalez, who has completed a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, is reportedly a member of the Youth Communist Union and happy with his family in Cuba. Regularly, he takes time to thank those who fought for his return to Cuba.
In several interviews, Gonzalez has said Fidel Castro is his hero. In the documentary, he discusses his admiration and respect for the deceased Cuban leader.
