Blue Whale Challenge believed to encourage self-harm, suicide in teens

By Chara
A new online game is raising concerns among law enforcement agencies and educational institutions that the game might have harmful effects on teen-agers – specifically, that it might lead them to commit suicide.
Known as the Blue Whale Challenge, the game was created on social media. An administrator assigns tasks to members of social media groups who agree to take the Blue Whale Challenge. Group members have to complete the various tasks that comprise the game within 50 days.
To find a group, teens must use specific hashtags in social media. However, not everyone can join. Players must be selected by an administrator.
There are reports that the challenge also is offered as an app. However, neither the App Store nor the Google Store has it available for download.
The game starts with simple tasks, such as watching a movie. To make sure the teen has performed the task, administrators request a picture of completion of each assigned task.
Each day, the tasks become more extreme until the administrator requests that the players harm themselves. Typically, the challenge ends with players being asked to take their own lives.
Players are often afraid to stop playing once they’ve started for fear of being cyber-bullied or blackmailed on social media. A report from The Sun newspaper states that more than 130 deaths in Russia have been attributed to the Blue Whale Challenge. Teen suicides have been reportedly linked to the game elsewhere, including in Brazil and England.
As multiple news sources have reported, school districts across the United States are sending letters to parents to warn them of the dangers of the Blue Whale Challenge, and to help them be aware of changes in their children’s behavior from playing the game. The Shawnee Mission (Kan.) School District, for example, sent a warning to parents, asking them to keep an eye on their children’s Facebook contacts and to make sure they’re only talking to people they know. In addition, school authorities have requested that parents observe their children for suspicious behavior and reach out to school social workers or nurses if they have concerns.
Kansas resident Stacy Martinez is among those parents who’ve expressed concerns about the Blue Whale Challenge.
“I think it is a horrific game,” Martinez said. “When I knew of it, I was speechless for a moment. I just couldn’t grasp the idea of how someone could do this to our children. I wanted to know more – and the more details I learned, the more it … (brought) tears to my eyes. I thought about the families that have lost a loved one due to this sick person who came up with the game, and my heart goes out to them.”
To protect children from the pitfalls of the Blue Whale Challenge and other online games, parents are advised to talk to their children about the potential dangers of social media. Moreover, parents who suspect they have a child who’s behaving differently or has changed his or her social media habits are advised to check his phone and make sure his social media activity is healthy.
If parents have a teen who’s playing the Blue Whale Challenge and showing suicidal tendencies, there are multiple organizations they can contact for help, including Lifeline Crisis Chat. To contact Lifeline Crisis Chat, call 1-(800)-273-8255 or visit crisischat.org.
