As multiple news agencies have reported, a bomb was set off Monday (May 22) in the Manchester (England) Arena lobby following a concert that night by singer Ariana Grande. According to a report Wednesday morning (May 24) published by the British newspaper The Telegraph, 22 people died, including bomber Salman Abedi. Abedi was a college dropout who had reportedly visited Syria and had parents living in Lybia, according to a report Wednesday by The New York Times.
CNNMoney reported Tuesday (May 23) that 59 other people suffered injuries from the explosion.
At press time, multiple news agencies were reporting that Britain was on critical alert following the attack, as ordered by British Prime Minister Theresa May. They also were reporting that law enforcement officers and British officials were searching for other individuals believed to have been linked to the attack. In related news, The Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday that British authorities had arrested four suspects.
“I think it’s very clear this is a network we are investigating,” The Tribune and other news sources quoted Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins as saying.
Grande posted a reaction to the tragedy on her Twitter page.
“Broken,” she wrote. “From the bottom of my heart, I am so sorry. I don’t have words.”
Grande’s show was part of a concert tour that was to have included a show on Thursday (May 25) in London and concerts on the European continent, CNN Money reported. The news agency also reported the tour has been put on hold.
