Arpaio found guilty

By Melissa Arroyo
After illegally profiling Latinos in Arizona for more than two decades, former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio could face six months in jail.
Arpaio, who proclaimed himself as “America’s toughest sheriff,” is facing legal consequences for blatantly encouraging law enforcement to detain any Latinos suspected of living in the country illegally and turning them over to federal authorities.
During a recent trial in federal court in Phoenix, U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton accused Arpaio of intentionally violating 2011 court orders of refraining from detaining Latinos on simple suspicion and no evidence of legal status, leading to arrests of some Latinos who were legal residents and citizens.
However, Arpaio’s attorneys argued that he hadn’t understood the order clearly when he continued detaining people. Several interviews given by Arpaio to Univision and Fox News were used to indicate that Arpaio was aware of the order and continued to illegally detain people.
“Despite this knowledge, the defendant (broadcasted) to the world and to his subordinates that he would and they should continue ‘what he had always been doing,’ ” Bolton said.
Also known for keeping inmates in tents in three-digit Fahrenheit weather and forcing them to wear pink underwear, Arpaio had rallied the support of far-right individuals. His longstanding time in office ended during the November 2016 elections.
Arpaio is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 5. During a recent interview with The Arizona Republic, Arpaio said he would welcome a presidential pardon from President Trump.
“Whatever the president wants me to do, I would support him,” Arpaio told the newspaper. “If he needs help with anything, of course I’m going to help him. ” At the time of this writing, President Trump said on Sunday, August 13 that he would consider pardoning him. He added that Arpaio is a “great American patriot” who had “done a lot in the fight against illegal immigration.”
The American Civil Liberties Union stated online that granting a pardon would “endorse racism”.
“President Trump would be literally pardoning Joe Arpaio’s flagrant violation of federal court orders that prohibited the illegal detention of Latinos,” said ACLU Deputy Legal Director Cecilia Wang. “…Make no mistake: This would be an official presidential endorsement of racism.”
