How to interact with your newborn

Commentary by Carey Juez-Perez
Finding ways to interact with a newborn can be difficult. However, providing some basic interaction with your new baby can encourage development and strengthen the parent-child bond.
Here are a few activities to try with your newborn:
*Tummy time: This activity helps newborns develop their neck and back muscles, which are important for sitting and crawling. With adult supervision, put your baby on his or her stomach on a flat surface. Talk to your baby and lie next to your baby, so your child feels secure. At first, many babies will cry during tummy time, but a few minutes of tummy time per day can greatly impact a baby’s motor development.
*Reading books: Reading is important for a baby’s brain and language development. And if you don’t have any children’s books, remember that reading a newspaper or magazine is as effective, as babies are continuously learning by hearing words and sentences.
*Toys: Newborns might not be interested in toys as their vision and fine motor skills are developing. However, newborns might enjoy looking at new shapes and faces. Try finding objects with high contrast colors, such as black and white, to grab their attention at this age.
*Singing: The sound of a parent’s voice can quickly soothe a baby. Begin singing songs to your child, as this encourages attachment and language development. Calming lullabies also can help put your child to sleep.
*Touches: Touch is most important for a newborn’s development, attachment and sense of security. Hold your baby, rock your baby to sleep and console your child when he or she is upset.
