How to get involved in your child’s new school

Commentary by Carey Juez-Perez, Licensed Social Worker

A new school brings new opportunities for families to get involved in their children’s lives.
Involvement shows your children that education is important and that you care about them. Here are a few ways to actively and positively get involved in your child’s life:

*The Parent Teacher Association (PTA): This organization helps with classroom holiday parties, organizes school events and helps teachers with other projects. Ask your school if it has a PTA. Most schools have a PTA program that consists of parent volunteers and teachers. If your school doesn’t have one, ask why – and ask if other parents have inquired about it. It might be the time to start one.
*Volunteering: There are many opportunities to help at your child’s school. They might include attending field trips, helping at after-school events, supplying food for school parties or assisting a teacher with making bulletin boards. Ask your child’s teacher for ways you can help at the school. Look for flyers sent home asking parents to help at events.
*Parent/teacher conferences: Many schools host two conferences a year – one in the fall, one in the spring. Conferences are important times for you to discuss your child’s progress, learn ways you can help your child at home and ask your child’s teacher (or teachers) questions. If your work schedule doesn’t allow you to attend conferences, make sure another trusted adult attends for you.
*Regular parent-teacher communication: Teachers value parents who regularly communicate with them. Keep your child’s teacher informed of any changes with your child that might affect your child’s performance at school. Notify the school when your child is absent. Ask questions when you need clarification. If you notice a change in your child’s behavior, ask if it’s noticeable to your child’s teacher (or teachers).
