Young people whose parents moved them to the United States as children are shielded from deportation and allowed to work here legally through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program – for a few more months at least.
Tragically, people with DACA status under the Obama-era program will begin losing their protection in March 2018, unless Congress acts before then.
That was the case, at least, until Congress’ top two Democrats – U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer – announced on Sept. 13 that a deal had been reached to help DACA beneficiaries (nicknamed “Dreamers”) without including funding for President Trump’s border wall. Since then, however, DACA’s status and which hands control its fate have become more confusing.
On Sept. 14, President Trump denied an agreement had been reached, tweeting that, despite news reports, he and Democratic leaders had reached “no deal” on protecting Dreamers. However, after denying an agreement had been reached and assuring that DACA remained in jeopardy, Trump tweeted this, the most confusing tweet of all:
“Does anybody really want to throw out good, educated and accomplished young people who have jobs, some serving in the military? They have been in our country for many years through no fault of their own — brought in by parents at young age. Plus BIG border security.”
Yes, Mr. President, there is someone who wants to throw out good, educated, accomplished young people who have jobs, including jobs in the military. That someone is YOU.
You, Mr. President, are the person who’s putting these people at risk.
Still, despite everything being as clear as mud, someone is fighting for the Dreamers. During a recent event in Sacramento, Calif., Pelosi said: “We’re in this fight to win for the Dreamers – when it’s easier and when it’s harder.”
