Caudillo running for KCK school board

By Chara

Irene Caudillo wants to help her community and promote education among children in Kansas City, Kan.
Caudillo is channeling that motivation into her bid to continue serving on the Kansas City, Kan., Board of Education.
The CEO of El Centro Inc. began serving in 2015 on the school board as a two-year appointment.
“One of the board members resigned and the board interviewed several candidates,” she said. “Then, they elected me. But my goal is that the community elects me to stay on the board.”
Although Caudillo is happy with the work done she has done on the board, she thinks there’s room for improvement.
“I have been pleased with our district, but not satisfied,” she said. “Academic achievement is important. We need to make our kids career or college ready. We need to do more to help Latino and African American students to continue their education.”
The Kansas City, Kan., school district has 24,500 students. Of those students, 46 percent are Hispanic. Caudillo wants them to have a voice by representing them on the school board. She also wants to work to retain and recruit students of color, and help provide training options for all the teachers in the district.
“We should do a better job with our teachers,” she said.
As a message Kansas City, Kan., voters: Caudillo said: “I have been a good representative of the community. I want to continue and open opportunities for our children… I want to help them, with the help of their parents.”
