Trump’s condolence call causes controversy

By Tere Siqueira
President Trump is involved in controversy again.
On Oct. 4, an ambush in Niger resulted in the death of four American soldiers. On Oct. 16, Trump called the grieving pregnant widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, one of the soldiers who was killed. The president reportedly told Johnson’s widow that her husband “must have known what he signed up for.”
U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, a friend of the couple, was reportedly with the widow, listening by speakerphone, when Trump called. Wilson described the president’s call as “insensitive.”
“He didn’t even know his name,” Wilson was quoted by The New York Times as saying. “He kept calling him ‘your guy.’ ”
In response, Trump complained that his words were being twisted for political purposes and disputed the allegations.
“The Fake News is going crazy with wacky Congresswoman Wilson (D) who was SECRETLY (listening in) on a very personal call and gave a total lie on content!” the president tweeted.
Also on Oct. 16, Trump deflected a question about the phone call, falsely claiming that former President Obama hadn’t contacted the families of fallen troops. According to The New York Times, Trump also told reporters that Obama hadn’t called John F. Kelly, Trump’s chief of staff, when Kelly’s son, 2nd Lt. Robert Kelly, was killed in action in 2010 in Afghanistan.
Trump’s calls to the other three families were without controversy.
This isn’t the first time President Trump has been criticized for his handling of the death of a servicemember. The Washington Post reported that Trump promised to send a $25,000 check to the family of Sgt. Dillion Baldrige, who was shot to death by an Afghan police officer in June. But the president didn’t send the money until the newspaper questioned him about it.
