Actors portray wives of civil rights leaders King, Evers, Malcolm X

Dark Was Their Journey, an original play by Jacqee Gafford, will receive a staged reading on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10-11, 7:30 p.m. at the Westport Presbyterian Church, 201 Westport Road. The play is sponsored by the Westport Center for the Arts. Tickets are $15.

Local professional actors Lynn King, Karen Wright and Sherri Roulette-Mosley are cast as Coretta Scott King, Myrlie Evers and Bett Shabazz, the widows of assassinated freedom-movement leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Medgar Evers and Malcom X. Years after their husbands were killed, the three women meet for a weekend and share their grief, their courage, laughter, fears and hopes. The play charts the evolving roles of the three women from spouses of iconic figures to notable figures after their husbands’ assassinations.  The play also notes the special relationship the three widows forged after their husbands’ deaths.
