Missouri attorney general opens investigation into Google

On Nov. 13, Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley launched an investigation of Google to seek information about the company’s collection and use of users’ private data.
According to the Republican, who’s running in 2018 for the U.S. Senate, Google has mishandled private customers’ data and manipulated its search results to favor Google products.
“No entity in the history of the world has collected as much information on individual consumers as Google,” Hawley was quoted by the New York Times as saying. “We need to make sure that they are actually following the law, we need to make sure that consumers are protected and we need to hold them accountable.”
The investigation is looking to demonstrate that Google doesn’t offer a “meaningful option” to opt out of Google’s data collection. In response, a Google spokesman stated that the technology company hadn’t received a subpoena from the Missouri attorney general yet, but assured that Google offers “strong privacy protections in place for our users.”
The investigation follows a $2.7 billion fine imposed in June by European Union regulators against Google. It also comes at a time when the U.S. government is paying more attention to the policies of the most powerful technology companies.

La investigación busca demostrar que Google no ofrece una “opción real” para darse de baja de la recopilación de datos de Google. En respuesta, un portavoz de Google declaró que la empresa de tecnología aún no había recibido la citación judicial del fiscal general de Missouri, pero aseguró que Google ofrece “fuertes protecciones de privacidad para nuestros usuarios”.
La investigación sucede después de una multa de $2,700 millones de dólares impuesta en junio por los reguladores de la Unión Europea contra Google. También llega en un momento en que el gobierno de Estados Unidos está prestando más atención a las políticas de las compañías de tecnología más poderosas.
