American employers prefer to hire immigrants over American-born laborers, according to a recent study published by the American Affairs Journal.
Employers might prefer foreign-born workers because of a few traits foreign-born workers possess that American workers generally lack, the study suggests. It states that immigrants tend to complain less than American workers, who sometimes look for the smallest excuses to complain about their working conditions. In addition, the study claims that immigrants have a better work ethic than American-born workers, reporting that immigrant workers “are more diligent, punctual, persistent, reliable, respectful and cooperative.”
The study comes at a time when President Trump is hoping to implement a merit-based immigration system that would reducing the number of lottery visas by considering multiple factors, including a visa applicant’s age, education level and job offers. The system would be a point-based system designed to bring “high-skilled” immigrants to live and work in the United States.
Kansas City, Mo., resident Elias Hernandez is among those immigrant workers who hope the study will help shape national conversations about immigration issues and change negative stereotypes many Americans have about immigrant workers.
“We are here to contribute and work,” Hernandez said. “We are not here to commit crimes, we are not here to steal. We are just looking to have a better life. In my case, I have a Ph.D. and I want to stay in this country. I want to contribute to the workforce and be part of this nation. Hopefully, people understand that we are here to … contribute.”

El estudio sugiere que los empleadores podrían preferir a los trabajadores nacidos en el extranjero debido a algunos rasgos que los trabajadores nacidos en el extranjero poseen que los estadounidenses generalmente carecen. Afirma que los inmigrantes tienden a quejarse menos que los trabajadores estadounidenses, quienes a veces buscan excusas mínimas para quejarse sobre sus condiciones de trabajo. Además, el estudio afirma que los inmigrantes tienen una mejor ética de trabajo que los trabajadores nacidos en Estados Unidos, indicando que los trabajadores inmigrantes “son más diligentes, puntuales, persistentes, confiables, respetuosos y cooperativos”.
El estudio llega en un momento en que el presidente Trump espera implementar un sistema de inmigración basado en méritos que reduzca el número de la lotería de visas.
