How to teach Spanish to your child

Part II of a Series

Commentary by Yanis De Palma

As was mentioned during the first part of this series, children receive many benefits from learning Spanish. And as a parent, you can introduce your children to the language, even if you don’t speak it.
Some tips to teach your children Spanish include the following:

*Scheduling times for speaking Spanish: Make sure your children know when they need to be speaking Spanish and when they need to be speaking English. Designating specific times will do that – and help create consistency in learning the language. Set a timer that will go off when language time is over.
*Books: Reading books will expand their vocabulary. But make sure they’re reading age-appropriate books. Play the audiobook version while the children read along. And read with your children. As you read the book with them in Spanish, your children will translate the Spanish words into the English words they already know.
*Games: Playing with your children will have a big impact on their language skills. If you can turn learning into a game, your children will more likely respond in a positive way. You can find both digital and physical games to start your children’s Spanish education. The app Spanish School Bus for Kids is a great digital option, and Scattergories can work as a physical game.
*Play music: Music is a great memorization tool when learning a language. Songs keep children’s minds engaged and allow them to express themselves. Play your children the Spanish versions of your favorites songs.
*Movies and TV shows: Watching movies and TV shows in Spanish will create a casual learning environment for your children. If your children listen to people speaking fluently, they’ll pick up the sounds and the natural accents. Then, they’ll learn to mimic the words in the same way.

*Películas y programas de TV: Ver películas y programas de televisión en español creará un ambiente de aprendizaje informal para sus hijos. Si sus hijos escuchan a personas que hablan con fluidez, percibirán los sonidos y los acentos naturales. Luego, aprenderán a imitar las palabras de la misma manera.
