Two teen tales about incidents that occurred earlier this month 1,800 miles apart independently illustrate the best and worst in human nature. The two occurrences also present a study in contrasts and a cautionary tale.
On Sep. 11, the national day of remembrance, officials in Gardner, Kan., dedicated a monument to honor sheriff’s deputies killed in the line of duty, paying special tribute to Master Deputy Brandon Collins, fatally hit by a drunk driver during a routine traffic stop on Sep. 11, 2016.
Olathe West High School student, Luke Gwartney shouldered the creation of the memorial as his Eagle Scout service project. It requires significant effort, according to the National Eagle Scout Association. The Scout must demonstrate leadership of others while building something to benefit the community.
Working over several months last year, Luke designed the memorial, raised more than $8,000 and secured donations of labor and materials. It was important to him that Collins’s service and sacrifice and that of other fallen deputies be remembered.
When asked about the impact the memorial will have, Luke said, “I wanted to do something above and beyond just planting a tree or placing a bush. I wanted to honor the men and women of the sheriff’s office.”
Luke entered Scouting in the first grade, according to the Boy Scouts of America Heart of America Council. He “has demonstrated dedication and commitment to the Scout tradition of ‘Service, community engagement and leadership development’ as he makes his way to Scouting’s highest rank, Eagle Scout.”
The day before in Auburn, Wash., two teenage boys ignored a convenience store clerk who’d suffered a medical emergency. They emptied the cash register and helped themselves to merchandise. The clerk, Zarif Kelada had suffered a heart attack and collapsed as he attempted to collect payment for merchandise the two teens had taken. Instead of calling 911 for help, the teenagers laughed as they cold-bloodedly robbed and ransacked the store, repeatedly stepping over the unconscious Zarif as they ran in and out of the store
Minutes after they bolted leaving Zarif to die, a customer discovered him, called 911 and began performing CPR. That customer saved Zarif’s life. According to a Sep. 26 update on the GoFundMe account set up for Zarif, he was no longer on life support and was recovered enough to leave the hospital.
The shockingly merciless teenage thieves were caught on surveillance camera. Police are asking for the public’s help finding them.
The Sep. 11 tale features a well-rounded human being, industrious, caring of others and motivated by moral and ethical values. The Sep. 10 tale features shockingly immoral, rapacious individuals, indifferent to the suffering of others, lacking empathy or compassion. Clearly, these three youths had dramatically different upbringings.
