On Thursday (Sept. 27), the Consulate of Mexico in Kansas City, Missouri, will present the Distinguished Mexicans Award to Dr. Jorge Soberon, a researcher and professor at the University of Kansas.
Soberon, who was born in Mexico, has been a professor and researcher in ecology and evolutionary biology at the university since 2005. In 2014, he was appointed distinguished professor. Before that, he was a professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He found out he had been selected as the recipient of the award through a Whatsapp text from his son.
“I knew I was nominated by the Consulate of Mexico, but I forgot about it, so when my son told me I was surprised,” he said. “Afterwards, the consulate sent me an official notice with the news.”
Soberon is honored to receive such an award. He hopes the Mexican government continues recognizing the work of Mexicans abroad.
“The fact that the Mexican government is recognizing the work of Mexicans abroad is important, and the fact that those of us who work outside Mexico and who have a double responsibility, both to the country we live in and the country we come from, it helps to receive such a recognition,” he said. “It’s a way to reassure me that I am still Mexican.”
The Distinguished Mexicans Award, in its first edition, aims to recognize the professional careers of Mexican nationals residing abroad who “have made outstanding contributions in their respective fields … and promote a positive image of Mexico internationally,” according to a press release by the Consulate of Mexico in Kansas City.
Earlier this year, Soberon was elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Class of 2018. The academy honors exceptional scholars, leaders, artists and innovators, and engages them in sharing knowledge.
Soberon was selected because of his longstanding trajectory and excellent reputation, the press release stated. He joins 30 other outstanding Mexican nationals residing in 31 cities in 16 countries. Awards such as this one help highlight the positive contributions of Mexicans to the United States, Soberon said.
“I would like to say that this emphasizes that us Mexicans who live here contribute positive things to this country, that in general, we contribute positive things,” he said.
The award ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the KCP&L corporate headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri.

Premio a Mexicanos Distinguidos va a investigador y profesor de KU
El jueves (27 de septiembre), el Consulado de México en Kansas City, Missouri presentará el Premio a Mexicanos Distinguidos al Dr. Jorge Soberón, un investigador y profesor en la Universidad de Kansas.
Soberón, que nació en México, ha sido un profesor e investigador en ecología y biología evolucionaria en la universidad desde el 2005. En 2014, fue nombrado profesor distinguido. Antes de eso, fue profesor en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Se enteró que fue seleccionado como el destinatario del premio a través de un texto de Whatsapp de su hijo.
“Sabía que había sido nominado por el consulado, pero se me había olvidado, así que cuando mi hijo me dijo me sorprendió”, dijo. “Posteriormente, el consulado me mandó una noticia oficial diciéndome que fui seleccionado”.
Soberón se siente honrado de recibir un premio como este. Espera que el gobierno mexicano continúe reconociendo el trabajo de los mexicanos en el extranjero.
“El hecho de que el gobierno mexicano esté reconociendo el trabajo de los mexicanos fuera del país es importante, y el hecho de que los que trabajamos fuera de México tenemos una doble responsabilidad, con el país en el que vivimos y con el país del que venimos, ayuda el recibir tal reconocimiento”, explicó. “Es una manera de asegurarme que yo que estoy fuera sigo siendo mexicano”.
El Premio a Mexicanos Distinguidos, en su primera edición, tiene como objetivo reconocer las carreras profesionales de ciudadanos mexicanos residentes en el extranjero que “han realizado contribuciones destacadas en sus respectivos campos … y promover una imagen positiva de México internacionalmente”, según un comunicado del Consulado de México en Kansas City.
A principios de este año, Soberón fue elegido miembro de la clase 2018 de la Academia Estadounidense de Artes y Ciencias. La academia honra a académicos excepcionales, líderes, artistas e innovadores, y los involucra en el intercambio de conocimiento.
Soberón fue seleccionado por su larga trayectoria y excelente reputación, según el comunicado de prensa. Se une a 30 otros mexicanos extraordinarios que viven en 31 ciudades en 16 países. Premios como este ayudan a resaltar las contribuciones positivas que aportan los mexicanos a los Estados Unidos, dijo Soberón.
“Me gustaría mencionar que esto enfatiza que los mexicanos que vivimos aquí aportamos cosas positivas al país, que en general, contribuimos cosas positivas”, dijo.
La ceremonia tendrá lugar el jueves a las 5:30 p.m. en la sede corporativa de KCP&L en Kansas City, Missouri.
