Some new developments have emerged in the story of a caravan of Central American immigrants headed northward.
More than 7,000 immigrants were reportedly walking and fighting hunger, exhaustion and thirst while heading from Central America to U.S. territory. However, multiple news reports have reported that the caravan has shrunk to 4,000 people because some of the immigrants have chosen to stay in Mexico.
The Mexican government has not provided aid to the immigrants. But everyday citizens have come out of their houses to give them food and water, and assist them with whatever else they need.
Still, many people in the caravan have stated that their final goal is to be granted asylum in the United States. Some have said they will do whatever they can to get into the United States.
It might be difficult for them to achieve that goal. President Trump has said the caravan will be stopped. Moreover, in April, a caravan of 1,500 immigrants trekked through Mexico, hoping to request asylum in the United States. As USA Today and other news outlets reported, the total eventually dropped to a few hundred. Some of the immigrants reached the United States and are awaiting immigration hearings.
President Trump and the Department of Homeland Security claim there are gang members traveling in the latest caravan. Trump tweeted recently, saying: “Many gang members and some very bad people are mixed into the caravan heading (toward) our southern border. Please go back. You will not be admitted into the United States unless you go through the legal process. This is an invasion of our country and our military is waiting for you.”
It is estimated that more than 5,000 troops will be deployed to the southwestern border. The Wall Street Journal confirmed that the total number of troops will exceed the combined U.S. military troops now in Iraq and Syria.
Sarah Pierce, a policy analyst for the nonpartisan Migration Policy told CBS News that members of the caravan will be applying for asylum. However, the asylum process is slow and can take several years to resolve.
