Another immigrant is subject to an out-of-the-ordinary attack

Commentary by Eulogio JP

Another out-of-the-ordinary attack on an immigrant has been reported.
On Oct. 22 in San Diego, an undocumented immigrant was the victim of a malicious act of racial profiling. As more than one news agency reported, the undocumented immigrant – whose name was not listed – stepped out of his home to get into his car. To his unpleasant surprise, he found his car with a wheel lock on it. It appeared to have been put on his car by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The undocumented man explained that two people dressed as officers had visited his home earlier that morning. Neither showed any identification. Nor did the homeowner ask them to identify themselves. After the agents had gone, the undocumented man went outside and found the boot on his car, marked with an ICE sticker.
A San Diego area news outlet contacted ICE to inquire if the wheel lock had been placed there by ICE agents and if ICE normally uses wheel locks. ICE spokesperson Lauren Mack claimed that ICE does not use that style of lock and that it would not appear to have been placed there by an ICE agent. She also said that no other type of wheel lock is used in homeland security investigations.
The victim consulted with immigration attorney Narciso Cruz, who agreed with ICE.
“Immigration does not put boots on cars,” Cruz told the press. “I verified this with other colleagues in our field, immigration, and none of them have ever seen anything like this. Some of my colleagues have contact with immigration officers who enforce immigration laws here. None of them have ever verified something … like this.”
The big question is, who put the boot on the car? Hypothetically, someone did it to scare the owner. Another important question is this: When will malicious acts like this stop? Incidents like this are too common in America. They should not occur at all.
The immigrant’s attorney is encouraging people who see something like this to report it to the police and is reminding people that it is against the law to impersonate a federal agent. So please, readers, always ask for an officer or a federal employee to identify themselves. It is your right to know who is talking to you.
You deserve to be free from the fear of out-of-the-ordinary attacks.
