For Scarlett Estevez, participating in a production like “The Grinch” is a first of sorts.
At only 11 years old, Estevez shares credits with actors such as Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell and Benedict Cumberbatch. Although Estevez has had a recurrent role in the TV series “Lucifer” and a supporting role in the movie “Daddy’s Home” and its sequel, “Daddy’s Home 2,” this movie marks the first time she has voiced a character.
Released in November 2018 in theaters, “The Grinch” will be available on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack, Blu-Ray and DVD formats on Feb. 5. Recently, Dos Mundos spoke with Estevez about her character and her experience with voiceover.
Dos Mundos: Tell me about your character, Izzy.
Scarlett Estevez: I think my character, she’s the brains of the group. I feel like she’s really smart and cute. … She’s adorable and she’s just really sweet. And I feel like her and the crew, they all speak the same. All the people in the group, they have their own characteristics. I feel like Izzy has a cute and sweet personality.
DM: How similar are you to your character?
SE: I think I’m a lot like my character. My character is sweet and cute and stuff. The only thing is that I think Izzy is a little bit smarter than me. I don’t think that I’d be able to help make a trap for Santa Claus. I think we’re a little bit different, but we have a lot of similar personality (traits).
DM: How is voicing a character different than acting it?
SE: Well, for just voicing the character, I don’t have to get ready, I don’t have to get dressed and actually look like my character. Like, I could have orange hair and I could have like a pink face, and I’d still look like me in real life. My character could look totally different. But I can voice a character and be fine.
DM: Which one do you like better?
SE: I don’t know. I mean, doing voiceover is really fun and acting is really fun, so I think they are both up there.
DM: What has been your favorite part of playing Izzy?
SE: I think it’s just cool because, when you get to play characters that are a little different than you, it’s just cool to see how they would think. I, myself, if I wanted to catch Santa Claus, I wouldn’t have thought to do what they did – and it’s cool to think … like someone else that I’m not.
DM: What has been the most challenging part of bringing Izzy to life?
SE: Probably for the animators, probably thinking how they wanted for the character to look. For me, it was just trying to match my voice to the character.
DM: I’m curious. Can you tell me more what the voicing sessions look like?
SE: I would go in, and I’d have the director on Skype with me, telling me how to deliver the line – and then, I’d deliver it in that way. I bet he was looking to something, maybe a picture to match it up to, but I didn’t get to see that. I was just listening to the director’s instructions.
DM: For those who haven’t seen it yet, why should they watch “The Grinch”?
SE: I think it has a very important message in it; and I feel like it’s also a cute, sweet movie that you could watch with your family, but it also has a great message behind it.

Dos Mundos: Dime sobre tu personaje, Izzy.
Scarlett Estévez: Creo que mi personaje, ella es el cerebro del grupo. Creo que es muy inteligente y linda. … Es adorable y muy dulce. Y creo que ella y el resto del grupo hablan lo mismo. Todas las personas del grupo tienen sus propias características. Creo que Izzy tiene una personalidad linda y dulce.
DM: ¿Qué tanto te pareces a tu personaje?
SE: Creo que me parezco mucho a mi personaje. Mi personaje es dulce y linda. La única cosa es que creo que Izzy es un poco más inteligente que yo. No creo que hubiera sido capaz de ayudar a hacer una trampa para Santa Claus. Creo que somos un poco diferentes, pero tenemos muchos (rasgos) de personalidad similares.
DM: ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre hacer doblaje y actuar?
SE: Bueno, sólo para hacer el doblaje, no me tengo que alistar, no tengo que vestirme y lucir como mi personaje. Por ejemplo, podría tener cabello naranja y podría tener una cara rosada, y todavía me parecería a mí en la vida real. Mi personaje podría verse totalmente diferente. Pero puedo prestar la voz a un personaje y estar bien.
DM: ¿Cuál de los dos métodos prefieres?
SE: No lo sé. Hacer doblaje es muy divertido y actuar es muy divertido, así que los dos están ahí arriba.
DM: ¿Cuál ha sido tu parte favorita de interpretar a Izzy?
SE: Creo que es genial porque cuando interpretas personajes que son un poco diferentes a ti, es genial ver cómo piensan. Yo, por ejemplo, si quisiera atrapar a Santa Claus, no habría pensado hacer lo que ellos hicieron, y es genial pensar … como alguien que no soy.
DM: ¿Cuál ha sido la parte más difícil de darle vida a Izzy?
SE: Probablemente para los animadores, probablemente pensar cómo querían que se viera el personaje. Para mi, fue tratar de coincidir mi voz con el personaje.
DM: Tengo curiosidad, ¿me puedes contar más sobre cómo son las sesiones de doblaje?
SE: Entraba y tenía al director en Skype conmigo, diciéndome cómo decir mi línea, y entonces yo lo hacía de esa manera. Apuesto a que estaba viendo algo, tal vez una imagen para emparejarlo, pero no llegué a ver eso. Solo escuchaba las instrucciones del director.
DM: Para aquellos que todavía no la han visto, ¿por qué deberían ver “El Grinch”?
SE: Creo que tiene un mensaje muy importante; y siento que también es una película dulce y linda que puedes ver con tu familia, pero que también tiene un gran mensaje detrás de ella.
