Street Talk: What is the meaning of Valentine’s Day?

Interviews by Tere Siqueira

What Valentine’s Day means depends on who you ask about it.
Recently, Dos Mundos asked some people what the Feb. 14 holiday means to them. Here are their answers:

“For me, (it) is a celebration that allows (for) creating stronger relationships in couples and friendships. People do this by sharing gifts and their time together as a representation of their love. The day is all about love in general, … which means celebrating love in families, relationships and friendships.”
– Ivan Hernandez –

“I think love and friendship … (are things) that we should celebrate every day. However, it’s really amazing that there is a special day in which we celebrate … (them). Even though …, with the … (passage) of time, the day has become much more about marketing, I like that there is a day to celebrate that feeling.”
– Kelly Britto –

“I think that Valentine’s Day is a beautiful way to remember and be thankful … (for) our loved ones. Even though (it) is a bit cliché, I think that (it) is a chance to escape out of our daily routine. It’s an opportunity to be with the one we love…. It’s a nice way to spend the evening and cherish our time with them.”
– Porfirio Carvajal –

“Feb. 14 is a day in which … (businesses) increase their sales. Most of them use love as an excuse to sell us their devices or … (products) … as we celebrate with our friends and partners. They use this amazing feeling and … (twist it, giving) it a material meaning.”
– Sarai Valencia –

“Valentine’s Day is a worldwide celebration which motivates us to share love, respect and (have) solidarity with everyone around us. I think that the date has become a symbol of love. But I think that we should celebrate love and respect as part of our everyday lives.”
