As a girl, Grisel Wiley learned the meaning of fearless determination.
As a woman, Wiley is working to instill fearless determination by empowering young women and supporting women in business, along with giving back to her community.
Growing up as the children of divorced parents and a mother who died when Wiley was young, Wiley and her siblings worked toward brighter futures. Eventually, Wiley became a business executive, serving as vice president for Marconi Wireless (North America), a now-defunct, London-based telecommunications company, before becoming a partner with her brother in Equity Payment Inc.
“I was six months into my semi-retirement (from Marconi Wireless) when my brother started a company,” she recalled. “He asked me to partner up with him in (an) electronic payment processing business. So we became partners, and it really gave me an opportunity to get more involved with the community.”
Wiley also is enthusiastic about helping women and non-profit organizations in the Greater Kansas City area. That has led her to becoming involved in multiple organizations, including the Central Exchange, where she’s an advisory board member.
Wiley’s activism also includes serving on the board of directors for the Girl Scouts and participating as an officer in the International Chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization Sisterhood, which owns Cottey College, a Nevada, Missouri-based “independent women’s liberal arts and sciences college,” according to its website.
“My focus is developing friendships, being true to myself and always trying to provide (help) to people – to genuinely help people and we all need it,” Wiley said.
Additionally, Wiley is involved in the Shawnee Indian Mission, and serves as a board member and mentor for the National Association of Women Business Owners.
“I have five young women right now that I might as well have given birth to them!” Wiley exclaimed. “They’re all highly, highly successful.”
Wiley’s other activist efforts have included being a Kansas City Angel Investor, where individuals invest in women-owned or women-run businesses. At the time the program began, it was one of only eight angel investor organizations in the country.
“I met some incredible women and still do,” Wiley said. “I was one of the founding members and it’s still going strong. They’re loaning a lot of money to women who have great ideas but (find it) very difficult to get any financing.”
After recently attending a conference titled “Living an Inspired Life and to be Fearless,” Wiley’s piece of advice for pursuing professional or business goals is to be fearless – and to continue trying.
“We all fail, and we all fear something,” Wiley stated. “It’s how we overcome that fear, how we address that fear; and (we should remember) it’s OK (to fear) change, (to fear) the prospect of failing. It’s natural.”

Wiley ayuda a empoderar a mujeres jóvenes
De niña, Grisel Wiley aprendió el significado de la determinación audaz.
Como mujer adulta, Wiley está trabajando para inculcar una determinación audaz al empoderar a mujeres jóvenes y apoyar a mujeres en negocios, además de retribuir a su comunidad.
Al crecer como hijos de padres divorciados y de una madre que murió cuando Wiley era pequeña, Wiley y sus hermanos trabajaron para lograr futuros más brillantes. Eventualmente, Wiley se convirtió en una ejecutiva de negocios, y se desempeñó como la vicepresidenta de Marconi Wireless (América del Norte), una compañía de telecomunicaciones con sede en Londres que ya no existe, antes de asociarse con su hermano en Equity Payment Inc.
“Estaba en el mes seis de mi semi jubilación (de Marconi Wireless) cuando mi hermano comenzó una compañía”, recordó. “Me preguntó que me asociara con él en un negocio de procesamiento de pagos electrónicos. Así que nos convertimos en socios, y realmente me dio la oportunidad de involucrarme más en la comunidad”.
Wiley también está entusiasmada con ayudar a mujeres y organizaciones sin fines de lucro en el área de Kansas City. Eso la ha llevado a involucrarse en múltiples organizaciones, incluida el Central Exchange, donde es miembro de la junta asesora.
El activismo de Wiley también incluye formar parte de la junta directiva de las Girl Scouts y participar como oficial en la Sección Internacional de la Organización Educativa Filantrópica Sisterhood, propietaria de Cottey College, una “universidad independiente de artes liberales y ciencias para mujeres” de Nevada, Missouri.
“Mi enfoque es desarrollar amistades, ser sincera conmigo misma, y tratar siempre de brindar (ayuda) a las personas, para ayudar a las personas de manera genuina y todos lo necesitamos”, dijo Wiley.
Además, Wiley participa en el Shawnee Indian Mission y es miembro de la junta y mentora de la Asociación Nacional de Mujeres Propietarias de Negocios.
“¡Tengo cinco mujeres jóvenes ahora mismo que podría haberlas dado a luz!”, exclamó Wiley. “Todas ellas son altamente exitosas”.
Los otros esfuerzos activistas de Wiley han incluido ser un inversionista en Kansas City Ángel, donde las personas invierten en negocios de mujeres o para mujeres. En el momento en que comenzó el programa, era una de las ocho organizaciones de inversores ángeles en el país.
“Conocí a algunas mujeres increíbles y todavía lo hago”, dijo Wiley. “Fui una de los miembros fundadores y aún continúa fuerte. Están prestando mucho dinero a mujeres que tienen grandes ideas pero (que les resulta) difícil conseguir financiamiento”.
Después de asistir recientemente a una conferencia titulada “Vivir una vida inspirada y ser valiente”, el consejo de Wiley para lograr objetivos profesionales o de negocios es ser valiente y seguir intentando.
“Todos fallamos y todos le tememos a algo”, explicó Wiley. “Es cómo superamos ese miedo, cómo abordamos ese miedo; y (debemos recordar) que está bien (tenerle miedo) al cambio, (tenerle miedo) a la posibilidad de fracasar. Es natural”.
