The final day of the 2019 KC BizFest was held Saturday (April 6) at the Carlsen Center at Johnson County Community College.
The last day of the four-day event was originally scheduled for Feb. 16, but had to be moved to April 6 due to weather conditions.
KC BizFest, an annual event by the Greater Kansas City Hispanic Collaborative and the Greater Kansas City Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, offers high school juniors and seniors in the Kansas City metro area an opportunity to learn a variety of life skills and business techniques.
More than 100 students participated of the four-day training. In the final stage, the final six participants presented their business project to the judges, who then chose the winners. The winners received their awards during the closing ceremony Saturday afternoon. This year, Brenda Garcia won first place and received $2,500 in scholarship to a college of her choice. Other winners were Lesli Barraza, Braulio Escamilla, Brenda Santiago-Ramos, Lance Ornelas y María Izquierdo.
The judges for this year’s final round included: Cristal Perez, Latinos of Tomorrow founder; Eric Negrete, director of interior design at Action Pact; Rene Aguirre, editor-in-chief of Ñ Magazine; and Clara Reyes, Dos Mundos founder and editor.
Reyes was impressed by the preparation and thought put in the business presentations and commends the program for the tools it gives to the students.
“It’s an important program because it gives (students) the tools they need to start a business in the future,” she said. “It teaches them how to start a business, what things they need to consider before doing that, and how to pitch their ideas to other people.”

Ganadores del KC BizFest reciben premios
El último día de 2019 KC BizFest se llevó a cabo el sábado (6 de abril) en el Carlsen Center en Johnson County Community College.
El último día de los cuatro días del evento se programó originalmente para el 16 de febrero, pero tuvo que ser trasladado al 6 de abril debido a las condiciones climáticas.
KC BizFest, un evento anual realizado por la Colaborativa Hispana del Gran Kansas City y la Cámara de Comercio Hispana del Gran Kansas City, ofrece a los estudiantes de tercer y último año de secundaria en el área metropolitana de Kansas City la oportunidad de aprender una variedad de habilidades para la vida y técnicas comerciales.
Más de 100 alumnos participaron de la capacitación de cuatro días. En la etapa final, los seis participantes finales presentaron su proyecto empresarial a los jueces, quienes luego eligieron a los ganadores. Los ganadores recibieron sus premios durante la ceremonia de clausura el sábado por la tarde. Este año, Brenda García ganó el primer lugar y recibió $2,500 en beca para una universidad de su elección. Los otros ganadores fueron Lesli Barraza, Braulio Escamilla, Brenda Santiago-Ramos, Lance Ornelas y María Izquierdo.
Los jueces de la ronda final de este año incluyeron a: Cristal Pérez, fundadora de Latinos del Mañana; Eric Negrete, director de diseño de interiores en Action Pact; Rene Aguirre, editor revista Ñ; y Clara Reyes, fundadora y editora de Dos Mundos.
A Reyes le impresionó la preparación y el pensamiento puesto en las presentaciones de negocios y elogia el programa por las herramientas que brinda a los estudiantes.
“Es un programa importante porque brinda a los estudiantes las herramientas que necesitan para iniciar un negocio en el futuro”, dijo. “Les enseña cómo iniciar un negocio, qué cosas deben considerar antes de hacer eso y cómo presentar sus ideas a otras personas”.
