5 ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is this Sunday. Below are five ideas to organize a party in your own house:

1. Mexican food
Salsa, burritos, guacamole, tacos… there are countless Mexican dishes waiting for you to try them out. (We like guacamole).
2. History lesson
Did you know Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican army’s victory against the French in 1862? With a much smaller army and knowing the French military force had the reputation of being the most powerful in the world, Mexico’s odds were not in its favor, but they resisted and beat the French.
3. Let’s break piñatas!
Piñatas are a tradition in Mexican parties. They are containers made of papier-mâché stuffed with trinkets and small toys. The participants have to blindfold their eyes and, with a stick, try to hit the piñata and break it so whatever is inside falls. Be careful when you do it at home and try not to hit anyone!
4. Party for everyone
Did you know Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the United States than in Mexico? Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexican heritage and is particularly important for people who live far from their country. In New York and L.A., you can find parades on the streets. If you do not have the material to build a float for the parade, you can always invite your friends home and celebrate together.
5. Let’s dance!
Mexican music is known for its lively tempo and the use of maracas and guitars. You can find it everywhere, from YouTube to Spotify. “El Jarabe” is considered the Mexican national dance and widely known as the sombrero dance. Why not hit play and try to learn some of its rhythmic movements?
No matter what you do this Cinco de Mayo, the simple thing (according to us) is to spend time with your family. Family is very important in Mexican culture. You can try incorporating some of the points we have mentioned and organize a get-together. And if you cannot visit your family because they are far away, you can always call them or send them a text telling them how much you love them.

3.A romper piñatas
5.¡A bailarrr!
