Wonderful World: Discover Singapore

By Tom Sawyer

Welcome tourists! In this edition, we will talk about the smallest country in Southeast Asia, which is also one of the biggest economic powers in the world. We are talking about Singapore. The country became independent in 1965 and has just over 5.5 million inhabitants.
There are many factors why Singapore is considered one of the best countries to visit and/or live in the world. Among the most remarkable is its great technologic growth to the extent of having robots in hospitals—which help doctors in surgeries, transport medicine or even interact with patients. There are also autonomous taxis, which take you places without needing a driver. Moreover, the country has four official languages, which makes it easier to communicate effectively and easily with most people.
Round trip flights from Kansas to Singapore cost $1,100 on average and you can find them with only one layover. The best way to get around the city is by using public transportation. The subway network reaches practically any tourist attraction in all of Singapore, but if for some reason it does not, buses and taxis are a great option—not only are they very efficient but also quite economical. Lodging, it should be noted, is a little more expensive than what is normal in other countries, having an average price per room of $80 per night in a three-star hotel, and $300 per night in a five-star hotel. The food in Singapore is a mix between traditional Chinese food, Indian and a little of western food. One of the traditional dishes is crab prepared in different ways as well as Satay, which are brochettes of chicken or pork marinated in peanut sauce. If you decide to eat at a street food truck, which are more common and very cheap, you can find a full meal for $7. For comparison, in a restaurant, a regular price is $20.
Here I describe some of the points of interest in your next visit to Singapore:
Merlion Park is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful areas in all Singapore and is home of the most known and representative statue of all Singapore: The Merlion. The image of Merlion is half fish half lion because Prince Sang Nila Utama discovered a lion when he was visiting the area where Singapore is now and decided to found this city in honor of this animal, while the fish part has origin in the fishing past of the city. Do not forget to take your picture with the Merlion that spits water, besides enjoying all the colorful and beautiful skyscrapers that surround this park.
Sentosa Island is the southernmost island in all the Asian continent. In this beautiful island, one hundred percent a touristic destination, you can find about 3.2 km of coast divided in three spectacular beaches: Siloso, Palawan, and Tanjong. You can visit Butterfly Park & Insect Kingdom, which presents more than 1,500 butterflies flying around you on top of having more than 3,000 insects of different kinds and sizes. In addition, on this island is the Universal Studios Park of Singapore, which is made in the image of the one in Florida only to a much smaller scale, with more than 20 attractions for children and adults, live shows, restaurants, souvenir shops and much more. You’ll also find a replica of Merlion but even bigger than the original and with which you must also take a picture. There are different means of transportation to get to this island. Perhaps the simplest of them is by taxi, having to pay in addition to transportation an amount of $1.5 for each person entering the island, but without a doubt the most attractive means of arriving is the cable car which has a cost of $ for adults and $17 for children.
Clarke Quay is one of the most picturesque and atmospheric areas in all of Singapore. It is comprised of 5 blocks of houses rehabilitated and converted into dozens of restaurants, shops and bars. The best time to visit this area is at night, where you can enjoy colorful lights that illuminate the whole area in a spectacular way. You can also visit an amusement park that is on this site and that has an attraction where a great spring will throw you at more than 200 km per hour.
Singapore Zoo is one of the most important zoos in the world. It has more than 3,600 animals of 400 different species and has a variety of attractions that are the envy of many other zoos. Among the most exotic animals the zoo has is the white tiger and the white rhino. The entrance fee is $25 for adults and $17 for children.
Marina Bay Sands is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular five-star hotels in the world. It has three big towers that are connected to each other on the 57th floor where there is a huge outdoor park; it has the best viewpoint in the city, a nightclub, a restaurant and also one of the best pools in the world at a height of 200 meters and with a length of almost 150 meters. In addition, the hotel has the only casino installed within the city. In the front of the hotel, you will find one of the largest and most luxurious shopping centers in the world. At night, you can enjoy a colorful show of light, water and sound where different images are projected on screens made of water and decorated by a rain of colors. Although most attractions can be accessed without having to be a client of the hotel, for Jacuzzis and the pool you have to be a guest. The average cost per room in this hotel is $370 per night.
The official currency of the country is the Singaporean Dollar, but almost all throughout the city you can find places to pay with a credit or debit card, so it will not be necessary to exchange a lot of cash into the local currency.
Without more for the moment I say goodbye wishing you have an excellent adventure. Greetings and have a good trip!

Conoce Singapur
