Trump wants 5 percent tariff on imported goods from Mexico

By Chara

On May 30, President Trump announced plans to impose a tariff on all imported goods from Mexico.
“On June 10, the United States will impose a 5 percent tariff on all goods coming into our country from Mexico, until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our country, stop,” Trump stated in a tweet. “The tariff will gradually increase until the illegal immigration problem is remedied.”
Trump claims Mexico has allowed undocumented immigration to happen and that Mexico should step up to solve the problem.
“If the illegal migration crisis is alleviated through effective actions taken by Mexico, to be determined in our sole discretion and judgment, the tariffs will be removed,” Trump said in a statement from the White House. “If the crisis persists, however, the tariffs will be raised to 10 percent on July 1, 2019.”
“Similarly, if Mexico still has not taken action to dramatically reduce or eliminate the number of illegal aliens crossing its territory into the United States, tariffs will be increased to 15 percent on Aug. 1, 2019, to 20 percent on Sept. 1, 2019, and to 25 percent on Oct. 1, 2019,” the statement continued. “Tariffs will permanently remain at the 25 percent level unless and until Mexico substantially stops the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory.”
In response, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he wanted to start a dialogue and avoid confrontation. Lopez Obrador said he would send Mexican Foreign Affairs Minister Marcelo Ebrard to start a negotiation process and solve the problem.
At press time, Ebrard was slated to meet Wednesday (June 5) with U.S. government representatives to try to resolve the dispute, CBS News and other media outlets reported. If the U.S. government does not negotiate, many industries might be affected by the tariff, including the footwear and motor vehicle industries, and the agricultural sector.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is among those who have criticized Trump over his tariff threats.
“He (Trump) demonstrated a further lack of understanding of the recklessness of his actions by threatening tariffs on Mexico,” the California Democrat declared in a statement. “The president’s threat is not rooted in wise trade policy, but has more to do with bad immigration policy on his part. We hope that the president will join us in bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform, be strategic about our trade relationships and recognize the importance of the U.S.-Mexico relationship. Yet again, the president is sowing chaos over the border, instead of delivering solutions for American workers and for American consumers.”
