Free breakfast served Saturdays at Prairie Village church

By Roberta Pardo

A Kansas City area church serves free breakfast every Saturday.
The Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Prairie Village, Kansas, hosts its weekly Saturday’s Miracle Breakfast. Led by Pastor Alix Pridgen, the breakfast started in March 2010 to help ease the burden for people suffering from the legacy of the 2008 economic crisis.
“We were feeling compelled to do this,” she said.
As Pridgen started researching and discussing with others whether it was a viable option, she discovered sobering poverty and food insecurity statistics in Johnson County, which ultimately solidified her decision.
“We always felt like this is what we were called to do,” she said.
The church serves fresh food. Anyone can participate.
“What was amazing right off the bat was the diversity of people (who) came from all over the KC metro area,” she said.
Since it started, the breakfast has been closed only twice because of severe weather. An average of 50 people come and enjoy the breakfast — a mix between regulars and first-timers.
Pridgen said that financing for the weekly breakfast comes from individual donations, primarily, and grants, though grant contributions have decreased in recent years.
So how do they do it?
“By the grace of God, and the good heart of people,” Pridgen said.
Pridgen wants to spread the word about this service and encourage people to stop by on Saturdays for good food and a welcoming community.
“We want to be (a) welcoming and safe environment for everyone,” she said. “We try to make it so that they can come and relax.”
