Mexico deploys National Guard to border with Guatemala

Mexico has announced it is taking steps to secure its southern border to help curb the flow of Central American migrants traveling through the country en route to the United States.
As part of an agreement with the United States to prevent tariffs, Mexico has agreed to send up to 6,000 members of its National Guard to the Mexico-Guatemala border.
“Starting from today, and in the coming days, the deployment is going to progress rapidly,” Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard told Reuters and other media outlets during a recent press conference.
Ebrard also said there would be a significant improvement within 45 days.
“We are going to do what we said we are going to do,” he said.
A few days after Ebrard had made his statements, Mexican authorities said more than 790 undocumented immigrants coming from the south had been arrested at the southern border.
In addition, the Mexican National Guard is reportedly patrolling in the southern state of Chiapas. Many of the personnel are wearing National Guard markings. Others, however, are not.
People in Tapachula, Chiapas, claim that Mexican authorities are securing the border at crossing checkpoints.
Other Mexican agencies are expected to enforce immigration policies along the border with Guatemala. They include federal police officers, marines and local police forces.
But some Central Americans have criticized the border security measures, including some expatriates.
“It is clear that we don’t come here because we want to leave our country,” said Nemesio Jimenez, a Honduran citizen living in the United States. “It is (a) necessity. We don’t have a choice – and honestly, I don’t think these types of actions will stop people … (from) coming to the United States. I ask everyone to understand. We just want to have a better life.”
