Wonderful World: Discover Queretaro

By Tom Sawyer

Welcome tourists! In this edition, we have to talk about a city in our neighboring country Mexico, which is the main headquarters of the aeronautical industry in the country, as well as one of the cities with the highest GDP in all of Mexico: We are talking about Santiago de Queretaro, Mexico. Founded in 1531 by Fernando Tapia, it has about 700,000 inhabitants while its metropolitan area has just over one million inhabitants.
The city was a strong promoter of Mexico’s independence movements. Here took place what is known as the Conspiracy of Queretaro, where the uprising of independence was planned for December 1810, but given that this conspiracy was discovered, the independence movement had to be moved three months earlier to September 1810. The Historical Monuments area of Queretaro was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.
Round-trip flights from Kansas to Queretaro have an average cost of $850 with at least one layover, although you can save a lot of money if you buy your tickets from Kansas to Mexico City and from Mexico City to Queretaro. The best way to get around the city is by car, though there is a tram called QuereBus, which helps you get to know most of the tourist attractions around the city, but do not worry because the area of the historic center of the city is easy to walk. The average cost of lodging in a 3-star hotel is $35 per night and in a 5-star hotel is $65 per night. As for local cuisine, do not forget to try the famous enchiladas queretanas, which are rolled tortillas stuffed with cheese, chicken or pork meat and dipped in a guajillo chile sauce on a bed of lettuce and then bathed with pieces of potato, onion and nopales. Also, to drink, do not miss the ‘atole de aguamiel,’ a drink made from cornstarch with the taste of mead, which is the sap that the magueys contain. The average cost of a meal is $6 with dessert included.
The places you should stop by in your next visit to the lands of Queretaro are the following:

The aqueduct. It is a monumental building throughout the city. This monument has 74 arches that reach a height of almost 30 meters and was created between 1726 and 1735 in order to bring more and better water to the entire city since it lacked clean water to drink and cook mainly. This beautiful monument of arches has a length exceeding 1.3 km and, despite being almost 300 years old, it is preserved in excellent condition, which is why it is one of the heritage declared by UNESCO. It is ideal for taking at least one photo under its arches.
Honorary Site to the Illustrious People of Queretaro. This pantheon pays homage to great people in the history of the city. Next to the aqueduct is the viewpoint of the city, ideal point to have a perfect perspective of the city. Just in front it is this beautiful pantheon, where the remains and also some sculptures of some of the most illustrious people in the city as the corrector Doña Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, one of the conspirators who helped in the planning of independence, are located.
Convento de la Santa Cruz. It is one of the most important temples of the city. The temple was built in the seventeenth century and it was here where the Indians were prepared to be evangelized. Besides the temple, as its name says, it is also a convent in which there are still friars living there and giving tours all over the place. The interesting thing about this site is that it has a tree that gives thorns in the shape of a cross and where you can get one to take with you as a souvenir. The cost of the tour of the entire convent is $2.
Historical Downtown. Site where you can find all the monuments, mansions, and buildings that are part of the Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Do not miss visiting this place by foot, enjoy the beauty of its streets and the architecture that surrounds them. Enter its museums and discover a little more of the history that surrounds the entire city. Visit the house of the Corregidora Doña Josefa Ortiz, site that is currently the Government Palace of the city.
Peña de Bernal. It is a town an hour away from Santiago de Queretaro. On this place, you can find the third largest monolith in the world. In addition, you can walk around this beautiful town, climb the Peña or simply recharge. Very close to this site, there are many vineyards so you can take advantage and take the famous tours of the cheese and wine route, which consists of going from vineyard to vineyard tasting different types of cheese and wine. These tours can be done on your own if you have a vehicle or you can hire a tour and simply enjoy the adventure.
Without more for the moment I say goodbye, not before wishing you have an excellent adventure. Greetings and have a good trip!
