Charter school for girls opening in KC area

By Chara

A school for girls will soon open in the Kansas City area to help young ladies discover their voices – and succeed in college and beyond.
This fall, Kansas City Girls Preparatory Academy will open its doors at 5000 E. 17th St. in Kansas City, Missouri. It is the first single-gender, open-enrollment charter public school in Kansas City.
“KC Girls Prep will serve young women from across the Kansas City Public School boundaries,” its website states. “The school will enroll 100 fifth-graders in its first year and grow one grade per year to form a 5-8 middle school and 9-12 high school.”
To offer extracurricular activities, the school will partner with Girls on the Run, Global FC and Kansas City Young Audiences.
Jahna Riley, family and community outreach coordinator said, the KC Girls Prep staff has worked on opening the academy for the past three years.
“Our board chair, Christine Kemper; and Julie Tomasic, an officer who has served in Northeast KC, have had this dream for a long time,” Riley said.
To Riley, what sets KC Girls Prep apart from other charter schools is that the school is focused on building sisterhood, leadership and students in the science, technology, engineering, arts and math disciplines.
The school’s core values include community, growth and freedom. In keeping with those values, “there are no tests to get into our school and no tuition,” Riley said.
To enroll at KC Girls Prep, students must be entering the fifth grade and live inside the boundaries for Kansas City Public Schools, a.k.a., the Kansas City 33 School District. Admission is a rolling admission during the school year.
“We are so honored to be opening this school in such an amazing community,” Riley said. “Please contact us if you want to learn more.”
