Wonderful World: Discover Dubrovnik

By Tom Sawyer

Welcome tourists! In this edition, we have to talk about one of the cities that were the locations of the famous TV show “Game of Thrones”, besides being one of the most important tourist spots in the Adriatic Sea. We are talking about Dubrovnik, Croatia. The city’s foundation date is unknown but it goes back to the seventh century and has a population of just under 70,000 inhabitants.
This beautiful city is currently a highly tourist site not only in the region but all in the country. This is due to the beauty of its old buildings and also the beautiful beaches that surround it. But it was not all glory in this city since innumerable battles were fought here, which caused authorities to put walls around the city in order to defend it and protect it.
Round-trip flights from Kansas to Dubrovnik have an average cost of $1,100 and have at least two layovers. The best way to get around the city is undoubtedly by foot as the most beautiful and relevant sites in the city are located in the historic Old Town and it is small so everything is relatively close. If you want to visit sites that are on the outskirts of the walls such as some museums, the city has an important bus line that will help you move almost anywhere. To stay in Dubrovnik, I recommend that you do so on the outskirts of the walled area and I assure you that you will save a large sum of money. The average cost of a room in a 3-star hotel is $50 per night and $400 in a 5-star hotel. The gastronomy of the city has great Mediterranean influence so fish and shellfish are one of its most important dishes, although the past of Turkish and Italian dominance means that meat, sausages and recipes from these countries are also available. The average cost of a full meal is $16.
The places you should not miss on your next visit to this beautiful Croatian city are the following:
*Dubrovnik Old Town: which has been a World Heritage Site since 1979. The best way to start the tour is to enter the walled city through the Pile Gate and buy a souvenir on the main street Stradun and then head to the top of the walls. You can travel them for $20. The tour is along the 2 km of walls that protect the city, also if you are a big fan of the “Game of Thrones” series you can do the tour where the scenes of the series were shot; the cost of this tour is $23. You can also visit the Luza Square, which was built in the 15th century, and get to know the Church of San Blas, the most important Venetian Baroque style church in the city that was built in 1715. You should visit the Cathedral of the Assumption, which was built between the 17th and 18th centuries. It was built on the old foundations of the Cathedral that was destroyed by a great earthquake years before. Do not miss the opportunity to get lost among the alleys throughout the city; I assure you it will be worth it.
*Mt. Srd: it is undoubtedly the best spot to see the city from the highest point. This is the best viewpoint in the city. I recommend that you make your visit near sunset to have a wonderful view of the city and the Adriatic Sea. Although you can climb on foot, the best way to get up is on the cable car, which has an average cost of $16 round trip, and from where you can take excellent pictures.
*Lovrijenac Fort: located on a cliff at 37 meters high. This site is located on the outskirts of the walled area and is currently a theater. If you bought your ticket for the walls, the entrance to this fortress is free. It is also one of the main locations used in the famous series mentioned above. From this point you can get some beautiful photographs since this site is in a strategic area that controlled access to the city both by land and by water.
*Banje and Sveti Jakov beaches: they are beautiful beaches that are located right next to the fortress. Like all the beaches in Croatia, you should be aware that they are rocky in style, so I recommend you bring water tennis so you don’t have to go through any trouble when walking. The water is very clear so if you go snorkeling you can enjoy seeing some of the local fauna.
*Cruise ships: an excellent way to get to know the city from another perspective. Through the many cruises on offer you will be able to get to know the city from another beautiful angle; besides, many of these cruises will give you a tour not only through Dubrovnik but also through the ports of different cities in Croatia or also from its neighboring country. The costs of this type of cruise ship are starting at $70 per day and it will go up depending on whether it includes food and which places are on the route.
The official currency of Croatia is the Croatian Kuna and, as in each article, I recommend that you carry some cash in the official currency to avoid overpaying or avoid missing out on any attraction in which dollars or debit or credit cards are not accepted.
Without more for the moment, and hoping you have had enjoyed the article, I say goodbye, not before wishing you an excellent adventure. Greetings and have a safe trip!

Conoce Dubrovnik
