Welcome tourists! In this edition, we have to talk about a country known for being a tropical paradise. It is part of the Asian continent and is the least populated country in the entire continent. We are talking about the Republic of Maldives. It has a population of less than 400,000 inhabitants throughout the country.
It is famously known as the Maldives Islands because it has more than 1,200 small islands, of which 203 are inhabited and 23 are considered atolls (islands that have their own reef and are surrounded by small islands and have their own lagoon). Currently the main income of the country is undoubtedly tourism as it yields more than 33% of income.
Round-trip flights from Kansas to Maldives have an average cost of $1,500 and have at least two layovers. The best way to move around from a city to another is in ferries, since their price is extremely cheap compared to seaplanes or speedboats. You can find ferry trips from $3 to $7 with transfers between one and five hours depending on the distance. Hydroplanes have an average cost of $430 per trip and fast boats of $280; check if your hotel has pick-up and drop-off to the airport included as you can save up to $250 in this aspect. Accommodation is something very important to consider in such a place. The country has more than 100 resorts spread along its atolls and main islands. If you take the search for lodging with patience, you can find 3-star hotels starting at $60 a night while luxurious resorts have an average cost of $600 a night. Due to the nearby location of both Asia and Africa, the cuisine is quite varied, with seafood and fish being the main ingredients and also the most economical since they do not need to be imported from other sites. A very typical dish of the region is the “Mashuni” tuna salad, which has coconut, chili, onion and lemon, which makes it extremely fresh and delicious. The average cost of a meal is $15.
The places and activities you should visit and do during your visit to the Republic of Maldives are the following:
*Malé: it is the capital of the country and its main island. Take the opportunity to get to know a little of the culture of the country visiting its streets, its fruit and vegetable market, the memorial of the victims of the 2004 tsunami and finally visit its Hukuru Miskiiy Mosque. If you have the opportunity to climb to the terrace of one of its highest hotels you can enjoy a beautiful view of the whole island, with its white sands and crystal clear turquoise waters.
*Night fishing: if you are a fan of fishing this is undoubtedly one of the best ways to do it, with a sky surrounded by stars and if you are lucky you may have to enjoy the bioluminescence caused by a certain bioluminescent phytoplankton that lives in this zone.
*Snorkeling: this is undoubtedly one of the best places to develop this aquatic activity. In many of the hotels you have fins, vests and equipment to perform these activities for free, but if your hotel does not have them, don’t worry because in many places you can rent these equipment for very low costs.
*Boat trips on different islands: these types of trips have an average cost of $30 per person and last several hours of the day, many of those boats include packages for you to dive with sharks and whales for an average cost of $100.
If your budget allows it, give yourself the opportunity to spend at least one day in one of the luxury resorts, where your bungalow is just above the water, you have first class food service and access to the most exclusive beaches and Paradise of the country.
Dare to explore the small nearby islands. Many of them you can access by swimming due to its proximity to the atoll and there you can enjoy a wonderful sunrise and/or sunset without anyone else bothering you, besides you can make your own picnic or romantic dinner with your partner.
If you are a diving lover, do not miss the opportunity to reserve your spot in one of the diver cruises that are offered in the country, because this site is considered as one of the best places in the world to practice this sport due to the remoteness from other countries that could contaminate the waters of the Indian Ocean.
The official currency is the Maldivian Rupee, although the dollar and the euro are highly accepted as a currency for both hotels and almost any activity. Even so, as always, I recommend changing at least a few dollars to the local currency of choice in Malé since it is where they offer the best currency exchange service. Something very important to consider is that the country has a Muslim culture so if you are a woman you should consider not having bare knees or shoulders on the outskirts of the resorts and for both sexes it is important not to make large demonstrations of affection on the outskirts of the resorts.

Conoce Islas Maldivas
Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de un país conocido por ser un paraíso tropical. Pertenece al continente asiático y es el país menos poblado de todo el continente; nos referimos a República de Maldivas. Cuenta con una población menor a los 400 mil habitantes a lo largo y ancho de todo el país.
Es conocido famosamente como las Islas Maldivas debido a que cuenta con más de 1,200 pequeñas islas de las cuales 203 están habitadas y 23 están consideradas atolones (islas que cuentan con su propio arrecife y están rodeadas de pequeñas islas y cuentan con una laguna propia). Actualmente el principal ingreso del país es sin lugar a dudas el turismo ya que arroja más del 33% de los ingresos.
Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Islas Maldivas tienen un costo promedio de $1,500 y cuentan con al menos dos escalas. La mejor manera de trasladarse de una isla a otra es en los ferries, ya que su precio es sumamente económico a comparación de los hidroaviones o los barcas rápidas. Puedes encontrar viajes en ferri desde $3 hasta los $7 con traslados desde 1 hora hasta 5 horas dependiendo de la distancia. Los hidroaviones tienen un costo promedio de $430 por viaje y las barcas rápidas de $280; revisa si tu hotel cuenta con recogida y regreso al aeropuerto incluido ya que te podrás ahorrar hasta $250 en este aspecto. El hospedaje es algo muy importante a considerar en un lugar así. El país cuenta con más de 100 resorts repartidos a lo largo de sus atolones e islas principales. Si te tomas con paciencia la búsqueda del lugar de hospedaje podrás encontrarte con hoteles 3 estrellas desde $60 la noche mientras que los resorts lujosos tienen un costo promedio de $600 la noche. Debido a la ubicación cercana tanto de Asia como de África, la gastronomía es bastante variada siendo los mariscos y pescados los ingredientes principales y además los más económicos ya que no necesitan ser importado de otros sitios. Un platillo muy típico de la región es la ensalada de atún “Mashuni”, la cual lleva coco, chiles, cebolla y limón lo que la hace sumamente fresca y deliciosa. El costo promedio de una comida es de $15.
Los lugares y actividades que deberás realizar en tu visita por la República de Maldivas son los siguientes:
*Malé: es la capital del país y la isla principal del mismo. Aprovecha para conocer un poco de la cultura del país visitando sus calles, su mercado de frutas y verduras, el memorial de las víctimas del tsunami del año 2004 y por último visitar su Mezquita Hukuru Miskiiy. Si tienes oportunidad de subir a la terraza de alguno de sus hoteles más altos podrás disfrutar de una hermosa vista de toda la isla, con sus blancas arenas y sus cristalinas aguas turquesa.
*Pesca nocturna: si eres un fan de la pesca sin lugar a dudas esta es una de las mejores maneras de hacerlo, con un cielo rodeado de estrellas y si tienes suerte puede que te toque disfrutar de la bioluminiscencia provocada por cierto fitoplancton bioluminiscente que habita en esta zona.
*Snorkel: este es sin lugar a dudas uno de los mejores sitios para desarrollar esta actividad acuática. En muchos de los hoteles se tiene servicio de aletas, chalecos y equipo para realizar estas actividades de manera gratuita, pero si tu hotel no cuenta con ellas no te preocupes porque en muchos lugares puedes rentar estos equipos por muy bajos costos.
*Paseos en barco por distintas islas: este tipo de paseos tienen un costo promedio de $30 por persona y duran varias horas del día, muchos de esos barcos incluyen paquetes para que realices buceo con tiburones y ballenas por un costo promedio de $100.
Si tu presupuesto te lo permite date la oportunidad de pasar al menos un día en uno de los resorts de lujo, en donde tu bungalow se encuentre justo encima del agua, tengas servicio de comida de primer nivel y el acceso a las playas más exclusivas y paradisíacas del país.
Atrévete a explorar las pequeñas islas cercanas. Muchas de ellas puedes acceder nadando debido a su cercanía con el atolón y ahí podrás disfrutar de un maravilloso amanecer y/o atardecer sin que nadie más te moleste, además de que puedes hacer tu propio picnic o cena romántica con tu pareja.
Si eres amante del buceo no dejes pasar la oportunidad de apartar tu lugar en alguno de los cruceros de buceadores que se ofrecen en el país, debido a que este sitio está considerado como uno de los mejores lugares en el mundo para practicar este deporte debido a la lejanía de los demás países que pudieran contaminar las aguas del Océano Índico.
La moneda oficial es la Rupia de Maldivas, aunque es altamente aceptado el dólar y el euro como moneda de cambio tanto para los hoteles como para casi cualquier actividad. Aún así, como siempre, hago la recomendación de cambiar al menos unos dólares a la moneda local de preferencia en Malé ya que es donde ofrecen el mejor servicio de cambio de divisas. Algo muy importante a considerar es que el país tiene la cultura musulmana por lo que si eres mujer debes considerar no tener al descubierto ni rodillas ni hombros en las afueras de los resorts y para ambos sexos es importante no hacer grandes demostraciones de amor de igual manera en las afueras de los resorts.
