First e-cigarettes related death reported in Kansas
A 50-year-old woman has died from lung disease related to vaping, becoming the first casualty of this type in Kansas, the state’s health officials said Sept. 10.
According to the statement, the woman became seriously ill shortly after she started using e-cigarettes and her symptoms progressed quickly.
The woman is the sixth person nationwide to die from pulmonary diseases linked to e-cigarette use, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported. As of Sept. 6, there have been more than 450 possible cases of lung disease associated with e-cigarette use reported to the agency across 33 states.
Before there was confirmation of deaths, the CDC had announced in a news release that it was investigating this outbreak.
The statement said the CDC is working with the state health departments in Wisconsin, Illinois, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, Indiana and Minnesota to investigate 193 cases of lung illness associated with vaping that were reported between June and August. Those cases included an Illinois resident who recently died. The death is believed to be first vaping-connected death in the United States, The Guardian and other media outlets reported.
Symptoms of the respiratory illness linked to vaping include coughing, shortness of breath and fatigue. In addition, people have reported gastrointestinal symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea.
Health officials have advised people who vape to see a doctor if they have those symptoms.
The CDC stated it has begun investigating to determine if the liquids people use to vape are causing the illness or if other substances might be the cause. In related news, the Federal Drug Administration announced it would start asking e-cigarette manufacturers to provide a list of the ingredients contained in their vaping liquids.
