The Flu season begins

Flu shots: The pros and cons

Analysis by Chara

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu season might start earlier than usual this year.
To be prepared, the CDC advises people to get a vaccination. However, some people believe the vaccine will only give them the flu instead.
If you are uncertain about getting vaccinated, here are some pros and cons to help you decide.
The pros include the following:
*The vaccine will help protect you: According to the CDC, getting vaccinated will reduce your chances of getting the flu.

*Getting vaccinated lowers your risk of complications: The flu can lead to other health conditions, if left untreated. This is particularly true for older adults, pregnant women, children and people with chronic conditions, all of whom run a higher risk of getting the flu.
*Vaccinations help prevent epidemics and pandemics: If you get vaccinated, you will be less likely to get sick and spread the virus.
On the other hand, getting the flu vaccine poses some risks. Here are some of them:
*You might still get the virus: After being vaccinated, it might take several days for your body to develop antibodies to fight the virus. While that happens, you might catch the flu. In addition, you might catch the virus if the vaccine you received did not include one strain that is spreading.
*You might have an allergic reaction: Possible symptoms include a rapid heartbeat, a rash, swelling, weakness, dizziness, difficulty breathing and wheezing. An allergic reaction, however, is rare.
*The vaccine might trigger Guillain-Barre syndrome: In rare cases, the vaccine might cause your immune system to attack your nerves.

If you have any questions or concerns about getting vaccinated, talk to your doctor.
