WaterFire charts a new course at Theis Park

WaterFire, Kansas City’s annual celebration of community, art and culture, will be held Oct. 5 at Theis Park, at the far end of the mall stretching south from the Nelson-Atkins Museum.
“The much-loved essence of WaterFire remains the same as we experiment with a slightly different venue,” said Cheryl Kimmi, executive director of Kansas City Creates. “Guests will enjoy the same, unique art installation they have come to expect, one that both floats and burns in Brush Creek. But that’s just the beginning of what has become an urban festival and shared ceremony that engages all of the senses.”
WaterFire is a celebration centered around Barnaby Evans’ glowing art installation that is gracefully sited along Brush Creek. The event immerses participants in a visual feast, as the creek is illuminated by a serpentine stretch of lighted bonfires from Oak Street to Rockhill Road. Flames and sparks fill the air, along with smoky scents of cedar and pine. The meandering braziers are kept alive by fire tenders working from black boats, noiselessly adding wood throughout the night. On shore, musicians, puppeteers, fire spinners and acrobatic performers complement the waterborne art installation, moving along the creek and throughout the park.
“You don’t just see WaterFire,” Kimmi said, “you are immersed in it.”
Participating in WaterFire this year are local arts groups Quixotic Fusion, StoneLion Puppet Theatre, Rhythmic Flames, The Zanzibar Drum Tribe of Kansas City, and Trio Forte. Refreshments will be available for purchase from food trucks.
“WaterFire brings people of different backgrounds together and invites them to engage with the art installation in a unique way,” said Karen Holland, founder of WaterFire KC. “By coming to Theis Park the evening of October 5, people will step into the frame of a piece of art and become part of it.”
This is the 11th year WaterFire Kansas City will light Brush Creek on fire (the 2018 event was canceled due to weather).
