Story by Roberta Pardo and photos by Michael Alvarado

On Sept. 27, Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools (KCKPS) celebrated the opening of Gloria Willis Middle School with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The new school takes its name from a woman who served and was dedicated to KCKPS for 59 years. Willis served in multiple positions in the district, including as an elementary teacher, an administrator and the school board president.
Built to replace the Coronado and West middle schools, Gloria Willis Middle School features a space designed for creative learning, small group amphitheaters on each floor for debates and formal presentations, and a flexible performance space with adjustable seating.
The school opened in August. It is home to roughly 779 students.
