The Mexican Ministry of Public Safety reported that 13 police officers died Monday (Oct. 14) after being ambushed while on the job in Michoacan, one of the states hit the hardest by drug trafficking violence.
The Ministry of Public Safety of the state of Michoacan shared in a tweet that the officers were attending a judicial mandate in the municipality.
“Police officers were in the town of El Aguaje, when armed civilians shot at him (sic); so far the loss of life of 13 (police officers) has been confirmed, in addition 3 were injured,” the tweet said.
While on duty, a criminal group attacked them, setting on fire two of the four police cars. Authorities are looking for culprits.
The Michoacan Office of the Attorney General reported that specialized staff members were still investigating.
“Specialized personnel in criminalistics, chemistry, photography, forensic medicine, fingerprints, planimetry and ballistics continue (working) in the place, performing the corresponding procedures, as part of the investigation work coordinated by the Public Ministry, to (the) effect of clarifying the facts,” the office said in a statement.
There are seven officers and a police car missing.

Al menos 13 policías muertos en ataque de emboscada en Michoacán
La Secretaría de Seguridad Pública de México informó que 13 policías murieron el lunes (14 de octubre) después de ser emboscados mientras trabajaban en Michoacán, uno de los estados más golpeados por la violencia del narcotráfico.
El Ministerio de Seguridad Pública del estado de Michoacán compartió en un tweet que los oficiales asistían a un mandato judicial en el municipio.
“Oficiales de policía estaban en el pueblo de El Aguaje, cuando civiles armados le dispararon (sic); hasta ahora se ha confirmado la pérdida de la vida de 13 (agentes de policía), además 3 resultaron heridos”, decía el tweet.
Mientras estaban de servicio, un grupo criminal los atacó, incendiando dos de los cuatro coches de policía. Las autoridades están buscando a los culpables.
La Fiscalía General de Michoacán informó que miembros del personal especializado aún estaban investigando.
“El personal especializado en criminalística, química, fotografía, medicina forense, huellas digitales, planimetría y balística continúa (trabajando) en el lugar, realizando los procedimientos correspondientes, como parte del trabajo de investigación coordinado por el Ministerio Público, para (el) efecto de aclarar los hechos”, la oficina dijo en un comunicado.
Hay siete oficiales y un coche de policía desaparecidos.
