Wonderful World: Discover Papua New Guinea

By Tom Sawyer

Welcome tourists! In this edition, we have to talk about the second biggest island of the world, one of the top worldwide places to practice diving. We refer to Papua New Guinea. The island is divided in two nations: Papua New Guinea and Western New Guinea. Papua got its independence in 1975 and it has almost 7.5 million inhabitants.
Papua is considered one of the most diverse countries in the planet, having more than 820 different languages, and it is also one of the most rural countries in the world since 70 percent of its population does not live in an urban city. Religion is also varied with almost a third of the population having beliefs of indigenous gods, another third of the population is catholic, and the last third is divided into multiple protestant denominations.
Round-trip flights from Kansas to New Guinea have an average cost of $1,600 with at least two layovers. The best way to get around the island is by plane. There are two local airlines, PNG and Air Niugini, although you have to trace your travel route well in advance so as not to pay extra flights. If your trips are going to be from a small town to another, it is best to ask where PMVs (small public buses) stops are, which are extremely cheap but unfortunately do not have a route throughout the island. Regarding lodging, it is pretty high because there are few hotels around the island, finding rooms in 3-star hotels at $90 per night, and in 5-star hotels at $200 per night. If you are an adventurous person you can find lodging in small indigenous populations for less than $30 in the homes of the same inhabitants of the region. Most restaurants serve Asian food, including Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Filipino and Indonesian; although if you decide to try traditional food, I invite you to go to the small local markets to try the pork stews with different vegetables and they are made in large holes in the ground where the meat wrapped in banana leaves is placed and kitchen to give a special touch to the special earth with which it is buried. Here you can find, in addition to the cheapest food, some fruits and vegetables typical of the region. The average cost of a meal is $20.
The things you should do and the places you should visit during your next visit to Papua are:

*Kimbe Bay: it is the best place to practice diving. In this region, which is located east of the island, you can find the greatest diversity of marine species in the whole island and it is also one of the places with the greatest marine diversity in the world. This is why here a lot of tours come for both beginners and experts in the field. If you have the budget and time, I recommend that you stay at the Walindi Plantation Resort, since on this site they have a specialized center for diving, as well as different tours around the small islands that surround the bay. You can also get to know the three different reefs that surround Kimbe: the Susan reef, the Donna reef and finally the Anne Sophie reef.
*Kokoda Track or Trail: this trail route is famous in the world for being one of the most arduous and complicated. It is a road about 100 km away where the island is traversed from north to south all within the rainforest. To complete it, you must make a trip over 6 days in which you will have to walk, climb and also swim, for a daily journey of approximately 10 hours a day. It is without a doubt a magical place to go among the most daring and intrepid.
*Sing-Sing Festival: it is the largest cultural event in the whole country. This ceremony is carried out with music, dance and the old customs of the Highland tribes. It takes place in the month of August on Mt. Hagen and is the ideal place to learn a little more about the lifestyle of some of the more than 1,000 different tribes that inhabit the island.
*Milne Bay: it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the whole island. Here you can find beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, scattered islands, hidden waterfalls, winding mountains that house long rivers all wrapped in its beautiful rainforest. Without a doubt one of the best places for hiking, bird watching, and diving, among other water activities.
The official currency of Papua is the Kina. I strongly recommend that you change a lot of cash into the local currency if you want to explore small towns, local markets, and if you plan to mobilize by bus or any service you wish to acquire locally, since Papua is a very rural country and you will hardly find places where you can pay by card or pay with American dollars.
Without more for the moment, and hoping you have enjoyed another article, I say goodbye not before wishing you have an excellent adventure. Greetings and have a safe trip!
