How to prepare your home for the winter

10 areas where to do maintenance and redecorate according to season

Clean the gutters
In order for the water and snow to drain properly, the gutters must be kept clean, the leaves and small debris removed. It is hard work and can be dangerous, since it is necessary to use a high ladder (resistant and stable, preferably aluminum) and a pressure hose. I advise you to hire the services of a professional, taking into account three details: check that you have the insurance, preferably choose a company specialized in this type of services and check their references. If you want to clean yourself, seek the help of a relative or neighbor.
Seal the cracks
The best way to control heating and cooling costs is to reduce the amount of air that seeps into and out of the house, according to Energy.gov. For that, you can seal the cracks with two methods: caulking or weather-stripping. Caulking is often used in the frames surrounding doors and windows; and weather-strips are more effective in sealing doors and windows as such.
Reverse the direction of the ceiling fans
Turn the small switch to change the direction of the roof fan blades in your home. That is, when it is summer, the fan blades move counterclockwise. In the cold season, and since hot air tends to rise as it is less dense than cold air, fan blades should move in the same direction as clockwise. In this way, the heat that accumulates on the roof is forwarded down.
Check windows and insulation
To prevent heat loss when the windows are not new or are not in good condition, you can resort to installing shutters. They are superimposed on what you already have; they can be installed inside or outside and cost much less than new windows. As for insulation, Energy.gov recommends putting insulating material in the attic, walls, floors, basement and mezzanines. Make an approximate calculation of the amount they will need at home in Fact Sheet Insulation.
Clean and tune the fireplace
It is important to keep the fireplace clean, be it wood or gas, and hire a professional to check it periodically. Before the cold starts, check that the vent is not blocked by debris or an animal nest. If you burn wood logs, annual cleaning is necessary to remove excess creosote (that blackish substance that accumulates on the chimney walls). In gas fireplaces, check that the fan and burners are working properly.
