Welcome tourists! In this edition, we have to talk about one of the capital cities of one of the United Kingdom’s countries, being the second most visited cities in this group of countries. We are talking about Edinburgh, Scotland. It is believed the city was founded in 1124 when King David I of Scotland gives part of the current land of Edinburgh to the Church. It has a population of approximately 500,000 inhabitants.
The city is divided in two: Old Town and New Town, both declared a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1995. The old part of the city very strongly retains its medieval style. The creation of the new city was due to the existing overpopulation and began to be built at the beginning of the 18th century.
Round-trip flights from Kansas to Edinburgh have an average cost of $1,000 and, although most flights have two layovers, you can find some with only one layover. The best way to get around the city is undoubtedly by foot, since the city is relatively small so it is the best way to enjoy every detail. But if you want to move easily and efficiently in the same way due to time or distance, the bus system operates 24 hours a day. The cost per trip is $2 or you can buy a full-day ticket for $5. The average cost of a room in a 3-star hotel is $80 per night while in a 5-star hotel is $220 per night. Though Edinburgh’s food has great similarities with that served in London, it should be noted that it also has several dishes very typical of the region such as the Haggis, a dish very seasoned with liver, heart and lungs of lamb, all of them stuffed in the stomach of the same animal cooked for several hours. The average cost of a meal is $17.
The places you should not miss during your next visit to Edinburgh are the following:
*Edinburgh Castle: located on top of Castle Hill and three of its four sides are protected by huge cliffs. The construction of this castle dates back to the 12th century for military purposes; it currently serves as one of the most important paid tourist spots in the entire city. Inside, you can find the Chapel of Santa Margarita, which was made in honor of the mother of King David I and which is also the oldest building in all of Edinburgh; the honors of Scotland, which is the collection of crown jewels constituted by the Sword, the Crown and the Scepter preserved in perfect condition and being of the oldest real attributes; the National War Memorial of Scotland, a building in memory of those who lost their lives in battle since the First World War; in addition to the rooms of the Royal Palace, the National War Museum, war prisons, military jail and much more. The tour around the castle can take many hours. The entrance fee is $25 for adults and $15 for children, or you can find guided tours in English or Spanish for about $35. It should be noted that, due to its location, this is one of the best places to appreciate the entire city from the heights.
*Royal Mile: the most important street in the city and connects Edinburgh Castel with Palace of Holyroodhouse. Along the street, you could enjoy tens of alleys and courtyards. In addition, it is divided into six famous neighborhoods: Castlehill and Castle Esplanade are the closest to the Castle and therefore the oldest in the entire city and it should be noted that in the esplanade of the castle they burned women who were believed to be witches; the Lawnmarket, area where most of the souvenir shops are located; the High Street, the best known area throughout the mile and where some of the most important buildings in the city are located in addition to many of its restaurants and bars; Canongate, where the wall that divided Edinburgh from Canongate was; and finally Abbey Strand, which is where the parliament square is located and ends at the gates of the Palace.
*Palace of Holyroodhouse: the residency of the Queen of England in Scotland. From 1503, the beginnings of this palace were built, all in order to move from the cold castle to a more comfortable space to live for the king and queen of that time. Here you can visit some of the ceremonial rooms all of them finely decorated and furnished with period furniture; more than 90 portraits of the entire dynasty; fine rugs; and much more. You can also visit the old departments where Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, lived, one of the most famous and controversial queens in the history of Scotland.
The official currency not only of Scotland but all of the United Kingdom is the British Pound. Do not forget to bring cash in the local currency to make purchases at any establishment.

Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de la capital de uno de los países de Reino Unido, siendo la segunda ciudad más visitada de este conjunto de países: nos referimos a Edimburgo, Escocia. Se cree que alrededor del año 1124 se fundó la ciudad cuando el rey David I de Escocia le sede parte del terreno actual de Edimburgo a la Iglesia. Ahora cuenta con una población aproximada a los 500 mil habitantes.
La ciudad está dividida en dos: la Old Town y la New Town, ambas declaradas Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1995. La parte vieja de la ciudad conserva muy marcadamente su estilo medieval. La creación de la nueva ciudad fue debido a la sobrepoblación existente y empezó a construirse a principios del siglo XVIII.
Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Edimburgo tienen un costo promedio de $1,000 y, aunque la mayoría de los vuelos cuentan con dos escalas, puedes encontrar algunos con tan sólo una escala. La mejor manera de conocer la ciudad es sin lugar a dudas a pie, ya que la ciudad es relativamente pequeña por lo que es la mejor manera de apreciar cada uno de sus detalles. Pero si deseas de igual manera por tiempo o distancia moverte de manera fácil y eficiente, el sistema de autobuses funciona las 24 horas del día. El costo por viaje es de $2 o se puede comprar un boleto para todo el día por $5. El costo promedio de una habitación en un hotel 3 estrellas es de $80 la noche mientras que en un hotel 5 estrellas es de $220 la noche. Aunque la comida de Edimburgo tiene grandes similitudes con la servida en Londres, cabe destacar que también cuenta con varios platillos muy típicos de la región como lo son los Haggis, un platillo muy condimentado de hígado, corazón y pulmones de cordero, todos ellos embutidos en el estómago del mismo animal cocido durante varias horas. Los lugares que no deberás perderte en tu próxima visita por la ciudad de Edimburgo son los siguientes:
*Castillo de Edimburgo: se encuentra encima de la colina de Castle Hill y tres de sus cuatro lados se encuentran protegidos por enormes acantilados. La construcción de este castillo data del siglo XII con fines de tipo militar, actualmente sirve como uno de los puntos turísticos de paga más importantes de toda la ciudad. Aquí dentro podrás conocer la Capilla de Santa Margarita, la cual fue hecha en honor a la madre del rey David I y que además es el edificio más antiguo de todo Edimburgo; los honores de Escocia, que es la colección de Joyas de la corona constituidas por la Espada, la Corona y el Cetro conservados en perfecto estado y siendo de los atributos reales más antiguos; el Memorial Nacional de la Guerra de Escocia, edificio en memoria de aquellos que perdieron la vida en batalla desde la Primera Guerra Mundial; además de las habitaciones del Palacio Real, el Museo Nacional de la Guerra, las prisiones de guerra, la cárcel militar y mucho más. El recorrido por todo el castillo puede llevar muchas horas. El costo de entrada es de $25 adultos y $15 niños o bien puedes encontrar recorridos guiados en inglés o español por unos $35. Cabe destacar que, por su ubicación, éste es uno de los mejores sitios para poder apreciar toda la ciudad desde las alturas.
*Royal Mile: es la calle más importante de la ciudad y comunica al Castillo de Edimburgo con el Palacio de Holyroodhouse. A lo largo de toda la calle podrás disfrutar de decenas de callejones y patios. Además, está dividida en seis famosos barrios: el Castlehill y Castle Esplanade son las más cercanas al Castillo y por ende las más antiguas de toda la ciudad y cabe destacar que en la explanada del castillo antiguamente se quemaba a las mujeres que se creía eran brujas; Lawnmarket, zona donde se encuentran la mayoría de las tiendas de recuerdos; High Street, la zona más conocida a lo largo de toda la milla y donde se encuentran algunas de las edificaciones más importantes de la ciudad además de muchos de sus restaurantes y bares; Canongate, donde se encontraba la muralla que dividía a Edimburgo de Canongate; y por último Abbey Strand, que es donde se encuentra la plaza del parlamento y termina en las puertas del Palacio.
*Palacio Holyroodhouse: es la residencia de la actual Reina de Inglaterra en Escocia. A partir de 1503 se mandó a construir los inicios de este palacio, todo con el fin de pasar del frío castillo a un espacio más confortable para vivir para los reyes de aquel entonces. Aquí podrás conocer algunas de las salas de ceremonias todas ellas finamente decoradas y amuebladas con muebles de época, más de 90 retratos de toda la dinastía, finos tapetes y mucho más. También podrás conocer los antiguos departamentos donde vivió María Estuardo, una de las reinas más famosas y controversiales de la historia de Escocia.
La moneda oficial no sólo de Escocia sino de todo Reino Unido es la Libra Esterlina. No olvides llevar efectivo en la moneda local para poder realizar compras en cualquier establecimiento.
