Having a mentor – someone who will guide you and help you develop and strengthen your skills – is a great benefit to you personally and professionally.
As the United Nations Development Program states, mentoring relationships provide opportunities to discuss ideas, receive honest and constructive feedback, and get the access to the information, knowledge and experience of a more seasoned professional that you need.
However, when choosing a mentor, you should consider several factors. To find the right person to help you achieve your goals, use the following tips:
*Find someone you admire: It is not enough to find someone who is in your field. If you find someone you admire, you will find someone you want to emulate. That will, in turn, give you a template to follow when you pursue your career. Talk to several people in your field, so you can find someone you relate to – and who relates to you.
*Study the person: Once you choose a mentor, study what your mentor has done. Ask your mentor about his or her strengths and skills.
*Make it formal by asking the person to be your mentor: Once you have studied the person, set up an informal meeting and talk to the person about what you admire about the person. Ask questions and share your interest in being his or her mentee.
*Request feedback and challenges: Once you have the relationship established, express your ideas and concerns, then request feedback and set up challenges to provide you with opportunities to grow.
*Get involved and commit: If you want to get the most from the relationship and get a different perspective on your career, you must be involved and committed.

¿Cómo encontrar el mentor adecuado?
Tener un mentor, alguien que lo guie y ayude a desarrollar y fortalecer sus habilidades, es un beneficio grande para usted personal y profesionalmente.
Como indica el Programa de la Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo, las relaciones con mentores brindan oportunidades para discutir ideas, recibir comentarios honestos y constructivos y obtener acceso a la información, conocimiento y experiencia de un profesional más experimentado que usted necesite.
Sin embargo, cuando elija a un mentor, debe considera varios factores. Para encontrar a la persona adecuada para ayudarle a lograr sus objetivos, use los siguientes consejos:
*Encuentre a alguien que admire: no es suficiente encontrar a alguien que esté en su campo. Si encuentra a alguien que admira, encontrará a alguien que quiera emular. Eso, a su vez, le dará una plantilla para seguir cuando siga su carrera. Hable con varias personas en su campo, para que pueda encontrar a alguien con quien se relacione, y que se relacione con usted.
*Estudie a la persona: una vez que escoja un mentor, estudie lo que su mentor haya hecho. Pregúntele a su mentor sobre sus fortalezas y habilidades.
