A drive-by shooting Sunday night (Jan. 19) outside a nightclub in Kansas City, Missouri, left one dead and 15 injured.
At a press conference Monday (Jan. 20), the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) revealed the name of the suspect, who was slain during the shooting at 9ine Ultra Lounge.
Chief Rick Smith said the suspected shooter, Jahron Swift, fatally shot a woman around 11:30 p.m. in the 4800 block of Nolan Road. KCPD officers had been at the nightclub minutes before the shooting started, he said.
According to the police, officers responded quickly and found a chaotic scene with people fleeing in vehicles. Then, the police began receiving reports of victims arriving at area hospitals, though it remains unclear whether all 15 wounded people were struck by gunfire.
Three of the victims were in critical condition.
The suspected shooter was killed by a security guard working on the property, authorities said.
“It appears that he saved lives,” Smith said.
The police recovered multiple guns at the scene – all believed to be the suspect’s. They believe Swift and the guard were the only people to fire shots.
Mayor Quinton Lucas called the shooting disappointing on a night that was supposed to be one of celebration. A few hours earlier, the Kansas City Chiefs had defeated the Tennessee Titans at Arrowhead Stadium for a spot in the Super Bowl (see related story).
“We got a problem in Kansas City,” he said, as reported by The Kansas City Star. “We’re losing too many lives. We have too many people shot every year.”
A motive for the shooting is still unclear. Detectives are investigating.
As of Monday, the police had not yet spoken with each victim.

Tiroteo fuera de un club nocturno deja un muerto y 15 heridos
Un tiroteo el domingo por la noche (19 de enero) frente a un club nocturno en Kansas City, Missouri, dejó un muerto y 15 heridos.
En una conferencia de prensa el lunes (20 de enero), el Departamento de Policia de Kansas City (KCPD, por sus siglas en inglés) reveló el nombre del sospechoso, que fue asesinado durante el tiroteo en 9ine Ultra Lounge.
El jefe Rick Smith dijo que el presunto tirador, Jahron Swift, le disparó fatalmente a una mujer alrededor de las 11:30 p.m. en la cuadra 4800 de Nolan Road. Los oficiales de KCPD habían estado en el club nocturno minutos antes de que comenzara el tiroteo, dijo.
Según la policía, los agentes respondieron rápidamente y encontraron una escena caótica con personas que huían en vehículos. Luego, la policía comenzó a recibir informes de víctimas que llegaban a los hospitales del área, aunque no está claro si las 15 personas heridas fueron alcanzadas por disparos.
Tres de las víctimas estaban en condición crítica.

Aún no está claro el motivo del tiroteo. Los detectives están investigando.
