Two Mexican entrepreneurs have found success with their company Desserto, which produces synthetic leather made of cactus, also known as cactus leather.
Company owners Adrian Lopez and Marte Cazares hope to revolutionize the clothing industry in Mexico. They began producing cactus leather to help reduce animal deaths caused by the sale of leather and skins.
“We agree that all industries that handle synthetic leather, such as the automotive, furniture and fashion industries, face a very serious problem that is the environmental footprint left by their products,” Lopez told the Mexican newspaper El Universal.
Leather made of vegetal material is not a new concept in fashion; however, Lopez and Cazares, who met in 2011 in Taiwan, are the first ones making 100-percent Mexican cactus leather.
Desserto also creates jobs in Guadalajara, where the company’s headquarters are located.
“Indirectly, around 50 people benefit here in Mexico and we hope to create more, if this material is produced at larger scale and we can help with the growth (of the local economy),” Lopez said El Universal.
Creating the company was not easy. In 2017, Lopez and Cazares returned from China to start investigating into cactus leather. They were not scientists, so they worked with a group of experts to create products that were resistant, flexible and breathable.
Recently, they showed their products, including bags, backpacks and purses, at the Lineapelle Fair 2019 in Milano, Italy, where they got positive comments about the products.
“This material was well-received, not only by the fashion industry, but also the automotive and aeronautic ones,” Lopez said. “A speaker even said our material was the right one to be used in luxury brands.”
Cazares told El Universal that, after Lineapelle, they have been in talks with international brands to add Desserto products to their upcoming collections.

Empresarios mexicanos crean primera empresa de piel de nopal
Dos empresarios mexicanos han tenido éxito con su empresa Desserto, que produce piel sintética hecho de nopal.
Los dueños Adrián López y Marte Cazares esperan revolucionar la industria textil en México. Comenzaron piel de nopal para ayudar a reducir las muertes de animales causadas por la venta de cuero y pieles.
“Coincidimos en que todas las industrias que manejan pieles sintéticas, como la automotriz, la mueblera, y la de moda, enfrentan un problema muy grave que es la huella ambiental que dejan sus productos”, le dijo López al periódico mexicano El Universal.
La piel hecha de material vegetal no es un concepto nuevo en la moda. Sin embargo, López y Cazares, que se conocieron en 2011 en Taiwán, son los primeros en fabricar piel de nopal 100 por ciento mexicano.
Desserto también crea empleos en Guadalajara, donde se encuentra su sede.
“Indirectamente, se benefician alrededor de 50 personas aquí en México y esperamos crear más, en función de que este material se produzca a mayor escala y podamos apoyar al crecimiento (de la economía local)”, dijo López a El Universal.
Crear la empresa no fue fácil. En 2017, López y Cazares regresaron de China para comenzar a investigar la piel de nopal. No eran científicos, por lo que trabajaron con un grupo de expertos para crear productos que fueran resistentes, flexibles y transpirables.
Recientemente, mostraron sus productos, incluidos bolsos, mochilas y carteras, en la Feria Lineapelle 2019 en Milán, Italia, donde recibieron comentarios positivos sobre los productos.
“Este material fue muy bien aceptado, no sólo en la industria de la moda, también en la automotriz y en la aeronáutica”, dijo Lopez. “Incluso una ponente dijo que nuestro material era adecuado para ser utilizado en marcas de lujo”.
Cazares le dijo a El Universal que, después de Lineapelle, han estado en conversaciones con marcas internacionales para agregar productos Desserto a sus próximas colecciones.
