A possible coronavirus patient is being held in isolation at the Lawrence (Kansas) Memorial Hospital, multiple media outlets reported.
The unidentified patient recently returned to the United States from Wuhan, China, where the outbreak started in December 2019.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is investigating the situation, state health officials confirmed to The Kansas City Star Monday (Jan. 27).
According to a statement by Lee Norman, state health department secretary, the patient is not severely ill but is in isolation as a precaution. The person started showing symptoms in recent days and sought medical care on Monday.
The state health department is working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), LMH Health and the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department to identify and talk to anyone who might have come into contact with the patient.
Tests done to the patient were sent to the CDC on Tuesday (Jan. 28), and health officials expect results later in the week. However, they emphasized that this is not a confirmed case of the virus, but they wanted to raise awareness and educate the public about this new virus.
Symptoms, which include a fever, coughing, a runny nose and difficulty breathing, are thought to appear within two days to two weeks after being exposed, health officials said.
The only people at risk for now are those who have traveled to Wuhan or those who have come into close contact with an infected patient.
Anyone who has traveled to China and developed symptoms, or anyone who might have come into contact with an exposed person should stay home and contact a healthcare provider. They also can call the KDHE Epidemiology Hotline at 1-(877)-427-7317.

Oficiales de salud del estado investigan posible caso de coronavirus en Lawrence
Un posible paciente con coronavirus está recluido de forma aislada en el Lawrence (Kansas) Memorial Hospital, informaron varios medios de comunicación.
El paciente no identificado regresó recientemente a Estados Unidos desde Wuhan, China, donde el brote comenzó en diciembre de 2019.

Según un comunicado de Lee Norman, secretario del departamento de salud del estado, el paciente no está gravemente enfermo, pero está aislado como precaución. La persona comenzó a mostrar síntomas en los últimos días y buscó atención médica el lunes.
