Please, parents, stay home – for your children’s sake

Commentary by Chara

Note: This letter is for all those parents who are not staying home and following the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.

Hello, Dad and Mom:

Do you remember all those times I was sick and asked you to go out to be with my friends, but you said no because I was sick?
Now, I ask you to do the same. Not because you are sick, but because I worry about what might happen to you.
I am in fear because the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has made life seem like a horror movie. I am concerned about you and your well-being.
I ask you, please, stay home. Do it for me and others who care about you.
Every time I call you, I am scared. I was particularly worried a few days ago, when I called you and you told me the family was gathering to celebrate a birthday. I thought, “Are you serious?”
Unfortunately, you were not kidding. You hung out with a group of people as if nothing was wrong.
Come on! We live in the country with the world’s most confirmed COVID-19 cases.
The trouble with gathering in large groups is, we humans are dealing with a virus that might be asymptomatic. That is, you might have it and/or people around you might have it, yet no one shows any symptoms. But then, it wreaks havoc. Yes, this virus is a powerful, silent killer.
I know that seeing the family is important to you. I know you get bored. I know anxiety is difficult to manage. And I know it is depressing to be inside all the time. But I also know you are not alone. Millions feel like you do. And there are millions who feel like me, who want their parents to stay safe.
I do not know how to make you understand my fear. I do not know how to explain that we are living in a crazy, uncertain world and we should follow the social distancing guidelines, as recommended by the CDC and other health agencies.
You should consider yourselves lucky. Remember, you have food and a house. And because of the wonders of technology, you only need to go out in public when you need to buy food and/or other necessities.
Alas, there are many others, like nurses and doctors, who must go out in public. Like you, they have families. For obvious reasons, their families do not want them to go out in public.
See how this not about you or me anymore?
Let me tell you, you are not the only ones acting like this. I have spoken with many of my friends. Some of their parents are acting just like you. But there are others who are doing what should be done. Let tell you, I applaud them for complying. Remember, this a matter of taking care of one another and forgetting for a moment about our own selfish interests.
Do you think I am happy with this situation? No. I, too, am sad. I, too, feel anxious, despite what you might think. Sometimes, I need to hug my dog to feel better. So, please, stay home. If you do, you can help keep this pandemic under control.
I hope you understand.
Sincerely,
Your Grown Son/Daughter

Lamentablemente, no estaban bromeando.
No sé cómo hacerles entender mi miedo.
Sinceramente,
Tu hijo(a) adulto(a)
